What is wrong with people?
We have now interviewed and hired TWO people for the part-time receptionist position who simply did not show up for their first day of training/employment. I've NEVER experienced this in my life. I've interviewed and hired for other jobs before, I've always been pretty good at finding good people. I've had more difficulty filling this position than I've ever experienced. And every single applicant is, no offense, simply not good enough. The person expected to begin today, while has experience, seemed to be somewhat flighty, which (when presented with no other options) was OK... clearly it's not.
I've had 5, yes that's right FIVE, people not show for scheduled interviews.

Re: What is wrong with people?
MIL has been retired for a couple years, but would complain about the same thing when she was manager of a doctor office. And most of the employees who did show had issues. She had to have multiple conversations with one about her excessive use of marijuana and partying the night before, and importance of being able to come to work with a clear head.
I think your best bet if you haven't done this already is advertise position through word of mouth and find someone someone knows already.
My old job would advertise on Craigslist and nut jobs would respond.

Re: What is wrong with people?
This has happened at my office more than once too. And it was happening for us when the unemployment rate was at it's highest back in 2009/2010, and almost every person who didn't showed up for their first day was unemployed at that time. It was and still is baffling!!!
And yea, most of the applicants were no prize either.

Re: What is wrong with people?
Happens all the time. I had a biller work for 1 day and never come back. We are the most laid back office on the planet. When my boss asked me what I thought of her I knew she wasn't coming back. She had crazy written all over her. That was the last time he hired someone without my blessing.

It's seriously slim pickins out there. If anyone knows of anyone interested in a part-time position, days are Monday 9am - Close (between 5 & 6), Thursdays 10am - Close (between 6 & 7) and ALTERNATING Fridays 9am - Close (between 5 & 6), all with a 1/2 hour lunch, please please have them email me at [email protected]. I'm amazed at the irresponsibility of people. How can you complain there are no jobs when no one shows up for the ones available. Is the pay amazing? Of course not, it's a part time receptionist position, but it's a whole heck of a lot better than I ever got as a receptionist when I was working reception!

Ugh, that's the problem. The unemployed are not jumping into anything just to have a job/income. It's baffling that they'd like to sit home and earn zero rather than earn something!
jess: do they need experience? How much per hour? job growth opportunity? location? This is just in case I do think of someone.

Yes, the work place is not the same. People are beyond irresponsible and then try to turn shit around as if you're the one who's nuts when you confront them.
We recently hired 2 per diem social workers. Both of them stopped returning phone calls and emails and would flake out on appointments to see patients with their supervisor! I'm like w t f!! Don't take a job if you can't even return a phone call! They are being fired but she can't even get them on the phone to do that and they have our equipment! Lawyer letter!!
I see it as a reflection of the take no responsibility society and we get what we allow.

I would be willing to train the right person. Salary is based on experience but we're looking in the $14ish / hour range. Smithtown. Job growth, there's always the opportunity for the front desk, if they are good, to build on what they are doing at the front desk, take on added responsibilities, and maybe move up to Office Manager some day.

I actually went to an interesting HR seminar at NYU a couple years ago and they were discussing work ethic among this generation and how people now have this sense of entitlement which impacts the workplace and causes such high turnover rates. They already feel they should be on top instead or working from the bottom up. I see it a lot where I work too.

This is absolutely what I've seen. These are the kids who were raised with the "everyone's a winner" mentality. So if everyone gets the same award, everyone should get top pay just for showing up.
We've had 20 year olds (still in college) show up to interviews 30 mins late (with barely an apology), unable to use proper grammar and then they want ridiculous amounts of money AND full benefits for an entry level position....and they're dumb as dirt.
I really wonder what will happen to these losers.

I sent the info to a friend of my husband's. She's going to school for medical billing, so I think this might be something she'd be interested in to help get her foot in the door. She's very reliable and works very hard. We'll see if she's interested!

Hopefully she will be! She'd actually probably be a really good person for the job, with the potential to move to the billing position.

Agreed. I emailed my BFF about it, because I see it everywhere I look, not just in the workplace. It drives me crazy.

Re: What is wrong with people?
My office is having a terrible time hiring for a PT position too.
We had an excellent (young) person in it before, for about a year & half, but she left for full time employment. We had no shows for interviews, we had someone decline the offer due to the limited money/ hours ( which were explained before the interview), it's difficult.

Sometimes it is so scary what people come thorugh the door of my job! I am floored that some of these people have the same job title as me! Not showing for an interview or especially the first day of work, thats really bad! Unbelievable!

I'm a Field Instructor and it's an embarassment to the profession who they are letting into school these days. Not to mention the salaries these young kids who never worked expect. And it's freakin' social work....we notoriously don't make buck.

No, I did! Hahahaha, I gave my old job 1 months notice to help interview, hire and train my replacement. I'm working a few hours a week at the new job, just to get acquainted with the system and their processes.
