I'm a teacher and I think gift cards are the way to go. Believe me though, any gift at all is appreciated. I think it is always so thoughtful of parents to buy gifts.
Also, notepad packages are always cute too. With pretty paper or thank you cards. Those really come in handy throughout the year.

I got a Target gift card for the teacher of my 3 yr old's class. I figured Target has something for everyone, lol.

Gift cards- Borders and B&N are always nice.
I got a Ralph's Ices one once and liked that a lot.
Beach bags with a towel, sunblock etc is always a cute gift.
Cards of appreciation that are written from the heart are actually my fav

I just write a thank you note.
Years ago we made flower pots, planted some flowers in them and painted "Thanks for helping me grow" on the outside. It was cute and teachers LOVED them.
