What is a contact lens "fitting"?
I have had a certain brand of contacts for the last year. I called the office where I bought them and they said that brand is discontinued and I'd have to be fitted for new contacts. I explained to them that I have a prescription from my eye doctor and she said if he didn't do a contact lens fitting for me then they have to do one which I would assume I'd have to pay for. What exactly is a contact lens fitting?

Different brands have different sizes... you would have the same prescription as far as the lens strength... but they would have to measure you based on the type of lens you would want...
ETA: i use accuvue moist 1 day... and they come in 8.5 or 9.0... im an 8.5...

Re: What is a contact lens "fitting"?
In my opinion, it's just another reason to charge $$ I was a contact lens user for 15yrs before I had Lasik. You would think that after 15 yrs of putting in my own contacts, that I wouldnt need a "fitting"...which is basically them watching you put in your contacts. One is already measured at the appt so why shouldnt they fit?

Re: What is a contact lens "fitting"?
They did a fitting last year when I went to them. Now that the contact brand is discontinued I have to go for another fitting? Wouldn't they have everything documented from last time?

It has been a year but I got a prescription from my eye doctor. They just wrote the parameters from the other contacts.

Not necessarily.
Let's say you're a size 6 in Long and Lean Gap jeans. Now pretend that they discontinue that cut. You'd still need to go into the store and try on other cuts and sizes to see what fits you best.
Same principle with contact lenses.
As an FYI, it's not just another excuse to charge $$. If you're improperly fitted with contact lenses, your eyes can develop all kinds of issues.

That makes sense but the parameters of my eyes have not changed so why do they have to remeasure them? Unless I'm not completely understanding what a fitting is.

they have to remeasure them according to the new lenses you want... not all lenses measure the same...

Exactly. This was where I was trying to go with my jeans analogy.

ITA with the posters above....not all lenses are cut the same...that probably isn't the right terminology! I've gone through it when my brand of lenses was discontinued and I had to try a few different ones to find the brand that fit me right.

Re: What is a contact lens "fitting"?
On a related note - what do most people pay for fittings? (Does $350 sound right for a fitting for progressive contacts?)
