Contact Lens Fitting
Since this is obviously a fee that is not covered by insurance, I have a question: is it necessary to have a new "fitting" done each year, especially when the prescription has not changed and you are ordering the exact same lenses as last year?

Re: Contact Lens Fitting
I've always been forced to have a fitting each year, even though my script hasn't changed. I go to Davis Vision.

Re: Contact Lens Fitting
I have had many arguments about this. One doctor wanted to charge me $200 while I was there for an annual exam to "fit" me. I finally had to go out of my insurance to a place that would give me an exam, I paid for that and he gave me my contact perscription as well (no additional $). I just found a doctor in my plan that at the same time as my annual exam she will "fit" me for contacts as well.

Re: Contact Lens Fitting
I went to Cohen's Optical in Roosevelt Field mall over 2 or 3 years ago and order my contacts through 1800 contacts. I haven't had to go back for a fitting and never have a problem reordering.

Re: Contact Lens Fitting
I always go but cheaper peepers has a contact lens fitting for only 40 or so dollars. That is where I went last time and then I did my order through 1800 contacts.

Re: Contact Lens Fitting
I just got my contacts through Target. The exam was covered through my insurance & the fitting fee was $45. I've been charged a fitting fee every year no matter where I go. Even when I went to the same doctor for years & my prescription hardly changed

Re: Contact Lens Fitting
I'm trying to find a cheaper way to do this now too. My insurance covers eye exam - but all the doctors seem to charge refraction fees (about $35 - just to get the script) even if you used them the year before - so by the time I pay my specialist copay plus the script charge it is $65-70 to get a new script. It seems most places charge that and more.

Re: Contact Lens Fitting
WHen I had no eye insurance & went to Sterling or Lens C raftres there was jsut 1 exam fee. they did one exam & gav eme both a cotnact & glasses perscription. Now I have Davis Vision insurence, ut there are no Davis Vison's near me, so I go to a non- chain place that accepts it.
The first time I went there was the first I had ever heard of a contact lens fitting fee. In was in addition to the regular exam which the insurance covered.
They do contact & glasses prescriptions differently, so I was under the impression that I had to have the fitting in order to get a contact prescription. You do need to get a new perscription every year. Optomotrists & nolien vendors (like 1800 contacts) are not supposed to refill after a year without a new perscription.
I believe they charged me that again this year, but I didn't change lenses or prescription.
