what i experanced at LIJ Labor & Delivery the other night..

SO the other night I went to the Hospital L & D for Sharp Pains in my Side we paged the Dr. and she said since the office was closed i should Prob go to the Hospital just to get checked out and in all fairness she warned me about how busy it was..

So I get there and we wait & Wait & wait .. and while waiting this is what i observed ..
not enough seats in the waiting area.. two women who were ready to go who had been waiting for HOURS since there was no Room for them .. they were flipping out yelling at the nurses they hadnt even been check out ... ( if that was me i would Have FLIPPED A LID too )

then you heard from behind closed Doors Dr.s coaching women in Labor ready one two three you got it thats it one more push.. and you didnt hear a the lady in labor say a Peep I couldnt believe it ..well mind you it was behind closed Doors..which i thought was odd to have random people outside a L& D room Door while Delivering.. ( Dont like that)

finally after 4 hours they call me in a room let me wait there for another hour till someone came in to see me and they said I had a UTI and the pain was from a LIGAMENT that is Stretching which i dont get because it is still hurting from Wednesday.. And they gave me Antibiotics which i know they say is safe but i still worry about taking them..

Overall i wasnt extremely happy with what i saw & LIJ L & D i know it was a VERY VERY busy night but still..

i am so sad to hear that. and my experience was the complete opposite.

Both times i had to go to L&D the nurses were exteremely helpful and attentive. i didnt have to wait at all.

and believe it or not, when i was pushing, you didnt hear much out of me cause i was PUSHING!

the only time you heard me was 10 mins before my ds came out i was screaming why the f wont he come out.. Other than that i was quiet in between contractions -trying to get my rest for the next one.

I'm sure you will be fine when it is time to deliver!!

Sorry that you had a bad experience. I gave birth at LIJ in 2006 and had a wonderful experience. The only part of the experience that I didnt like was that they either have private rooms or rooms with 4 people in it. I wasnt going to pay privately for a private room so I was in a room with 3 other people. Other than that, everything was great. Hopefully this time around, it will be a good experience for me as well. Chat Icon

Wow, if I had to wait with DS#2, I would have delivered him in the waiting area. He was born in three hours so that would have been interesting.

I delivered at South Nassau and will be having DC#3 there as well. Thankfully, I didn't experience anything like that.

Sorry you had that experience. It truely just could have been a busy and off day. I hope things go better when you deliver.

I really hope it is better for you!!!

ps sharing the room with 3 other people wasnt ideal, but it wasnt bad either, we all spoke to each other.

Re: what i experanced at LIJ Labor & Delivery the other night..

I must say that I also had great experiences at LIJ the two times I was there, once for a car accident 37 weeks pregnant, and once for the delivery...

I DID NOT hear any other women pushing or anything while I was in my L & D room.. I do agree, the waiting area is very small.. but since a lot of hospitals in the area have closed, all the patients have come to LIJ.

I know the experience was bad for you, but I hope it does not jade your delivery! I had a wonderful delivery, great nurses, and while sharing a room with 3 other women is not ideal... it was fine.. and I even had the room all to myself for the first night!!!

Hope when it is your day it is a much better experience!

Re: what i experanced at LIJ Labor & Delivery the other night..

You should all know that LIJ is in the midst of a MAJOR renovation. They are constructing a new building that will have a women's health pavillion which will have a new maternity ward and thus will improve its efficiency. When I had Abby they told me it would take three years to complete. Sadly, I may never benefit from it because I hope to have my second (and last) child before its completion.

I also had to go to L and D during my pregnancy late at night and was treated well. I am sure they prioritize according to the needs of the patients who are there.

A far as my delivery went, they worked fast and may have saved mine and Abby's life by determining my need for c-section almost immediately after I walked through the door. I'd never have a baby anywhere else.

I was going to say the same thing about the renovation. They actually had to take away the waiting room that used to be up on that floor to make more labor and delivery rooms, also when I had DS I was in a room with one other person, so they do have double rooms as well, and I didnt pay for it.

Re: what i experanced at LIJ Labor & Delivery the other night..

LIJ is packed...ALL THE TIME. I didn't really have to wait to long when I got my room for my induction. BUT, the nurse said that many hospitals and docs are no longer doing deliveries and LIJ is feeling the overflow. I can understand, but being in labor and waiting for a room, ugh...I cannot even imagine.

The NICU though is amazing, it brings tears to my eyes...The nurses are fantastic and the babies SO well cared for. Nice payoff.

ETA: I was competing with some chick for a private room. She must have been a room over. We heard her pushing and the baby start crying...and muttered "Beeyotch beat us" The nurse almost peed herself laughing. We wound up in a four person room, lol.

From what they told me, they save the double rooms for c-section patients.. which totally makes sense.. I was there, delivered at 2:28 pm on a Thursday, I was home by 11:00am on Saturday... They get you out as soon as they can if you and your baby are healthy... so being in a 4 person room was nothing.....

That must be why I had a 2-person room, so I guess there is a perk to a c-sectionChat Icon

I had a private room and didn't pay for it. The nurse manager assessed our situation and made sure we had one. The only thing I shared was a bathroom.

And as a PP said, the NICU at Schneider is amazing. You should NEVER need it but having it there for me was a saving grace. NSUH Manhasset is deferring many if not all of their peds to Schenider. They too had a recent facelift with a huge atrium for events for the kids receiving treatment at Schneider. It will ALWAYS have a special place in my heart.
