What does this mean?

So i went yesterday for my early anatomy scan. I am 16w2d. When DH & I were in with the sono tech, she asked us if we wanted to know the gender if she could tell. We said yes. After searching for a while and taking measurements, she asked if i knew if my dates were right, I said yes because we had done an IUI and she said "oh, because your only measuring 15w" that took me by surprise because thats a whole week off and up until now, the baby was always measuring right on track.

When i spoke with the Dr. she was very reassuring and told me that the baby was not measuring 15w but 15w4d which was only 3 days off from where I actually am so i had no need to worry and that all my other numbers were fine. She explained it as, someone trying to guess how old you are, based upon your height. She said, your 31 years old and your 5'2, but is it possible that someone else who 5'6 also 31 years old? which made sense to me.

I should feel better but i have a nagging worry in the backof my mind...Is this bad? Could the baby catch up later on? what happens if the baby falls further behind??

totally normal. after 12 weeks, they all begin to grow at their own rate and that is expected. Also, her femur could be measuring 16w5d while her head could be measuring 15w5d. Things really change now!

Maybe she will be petite! Do not stress it. Baby could measure perfect next time you go for a sono.

I could see why you are worrying...I am sure I would be too...but the Doctor said not to worry! Try to relax if you can!!

On a brighter note...did you find out the sex?

Re: What does this mean?

It's only a few days. With my first PG I was measuring behind for nearly the first half. In my last trimester he grew a lot!! He was born over 11 pounds. Things can change.

no, the sono tech said that since the baby was measuring behind it was still too early to tell the gender Chat Icon

the sono tech didn't tell me specifically what her measurements were. she said from what she saw, the baby was ok, but since it was gestationally younger than they thought it was harder to get a clear image on the screen. When i got back for my A/S i should know more.

All i know is the sono tech told me she was measuring just fine for 15w even though i am 16w and the Dr. confirmed everything was fine.

As you can tell, I'm a worry wart

What does this mean?

Totally normal. Different body parts measure differently. DD was born at 7 lbs 2.5 oz. Some people have babies who are over 8 lbs. Some have babies in the 6 lb range. Even though they're all full term, they'd all be measuring "off" on a sono because they're all actually different sizes. It's just an average. DD has a GIANT head and her head always measures in the 90th percentile, but she's a SUPER shorty and measures 15th percentile in height. This is after she's born, obviously, but it goes the same when they're gestating too.

The measurements at the beginning, right around 8 weeks, are the most accurate as far as dating the baby goes. After that, a slight click off here or there by the tech can account for an off date reading.

Trust your doctor. If they were concerned, they'd send you to a perinatologist. At our anatomy scan my first pregnancy, they saw a spot on DD's heart and sent us to the specialist. Everything was fine. But they definitely shy on the side of extra precautions.

Do you go back for another sono to find out the gender?

What does this mean?

At my A/S (I was 19w5d), the sono tech told me I was only measuring 18w2d. Coupled with some other stuff they saw on the scan, I started to freak out. I went to a High Risk Dr for a follow up level 2 the very next week (20w6d) and the baby was measuring 20w5d, so everything was fine. It's such an inexact science that while its hard not to worry, its important to listen to your Dr, they know when you should worry!

What does this mean?

That's very normal. When we went for the anatomy scan at 20 weeks I was measuring 18w2d when I was in fact 20w. As long as your LO continues to grow from each sono (say your next one is in 4 weeks, it should have 4 weeks of growth) then everything is fine.

It changes all the time do not worry. My DS was 2 weeks ahead in the beginning then right on track then ahead then right on track and he came 3 weeks early at 6.5 lbs and completely healthy.....if the Dr says don't worry I wouldn't.

Re: What does this mean?

Over my pregnancy I went to a few places to get sonos and what I found is that there will be some variation from place to place. Bottom line to me is that if my doctor was happy with the growth I was fine. As long as your baby is growing some slower and smaller than others cause they are all individuals.

Re: What does this mean?

I wouldn't worry! That's not too far off at all.

If the baby was measuring exactly 16 weeks at your appt, that just means it's in the 50th percentile.

At my growth sono (36wks), which can be so inexact, the Dr said my LO was measuring 35 weeks in the head and 32 weeks in the chest...so he's a peanut, but she wasn't concerned.

I was measuring a full 2 weeks ahead to the point where my 12 week blood test was invalid. They never changed my due date and I delivered three days late. Don't stress!

Re: What does this mean?

I wouldn't worry. When we first got our EDD it was 2/18 which made perfect sense as to when I O'd and when we BD. BUT based on my LMP we would have a date of 2/13. So now with everything we have going on the doctor at the imaging center started going on and on how he believes the baby is behind because he's not measuring 16 weeks but 15w2d which would put us at 2/17 and that this could be a sign of the issue they predicted based on the presence of tetraploidy in the CVS. I just had to cut him of and tell him that the original EDD is wrong and that it is 100% impossible for us to have conceived when they think we did.

I really wouldn't worry, if they really thought there was an issue they would have sent you for additional testing. I would have to imagine that some babies are going to measure "off" at some point. It's not an exact science!! Chat Icon
