What does "Black Tie Optional" mean to you?
We have a wedding to go to on a Saturday night on Long Island ... invitation says "Black Tie Optional"
What does that mean to you? What would you wear?

If it were me, I'd wear a cocktail dress. I've noticed that when it says black tie optional, most people do not go full black tie - but do dress up more than if it didn't mention anything about dress code, KWIM?

I had a black tie optional wedding. Most people wore cocktail dresses.

Being one who enjoys dressing up, I usually view it as an opportunity to wear something a bit more formal, so I tend to wear floor length gowns. BUT, I wouldn't think it odd to see someone in a cocktail length dress.

Re: What does "Black Tie Optional" mean to you?
I would say a cocktail dress.
For my wedding, we wanted to say "blacktie optional" but the lady who helped us with invitations said to put "blacktie preferred" instead, which was def a better wording because it reinforced the importance of formal attire. Lots of people wore gowns and tuxes Anyway, like I said, cocktail dress would be perfect, IMO

Same here. My wedding was black tie optional and there were a lot of gowns, though.

Re: What does "Black Tie Optional" mean to you?
Black tie optional means cocktail attire-like a tea length dress-fancy I would guess.
If it were me, I would stick with tea length or long black.

Re: What does "Black Tie Optional" mean to you?
Black Tie Optional literally means 2 things to me.
1. I wanted black tie but FH wouldn't let me.
2. I don't trust my/FH's family or friends not to show up in khakis and sundresses so I needed to stress the point.
I swear, those are the first 2 things that go through my mind. And then I look for a gown to wear because I love dressing up!

same here... I just put "black tie" for my wedding. I actually wanted to put "black tie prefered," but DH and my mother said people will wear what they want to anyway so at least it just means get dressed up... gown, cocktail dress and a tux or fancy black suit and tie for the guy.

Time for fancy duds!!!
I personally would break out a gown before a cocktail dress, but that's just me.

Re: What does "Black Tie Optional" mean to you?
I have a straight, black floor-length dress by Laundry that I got at Saks. I would wear that to a Black Tie Optional wedding. I would have DH wear a black suit with a dark tie - if not straight black tie than mostly black with a simple print.

Re: What does "Black Tie Optional" mean to you?
Thank you so much for all the responses, I really appreciate the opinions!
I'm just struggling with this one for a number of reasons ...
I weigh more than I'd like to (and being on WW hasn't helped much)
I have ugly scars on my shoulder from rotator cuff surgery
AND my first ever real boyfriend will be there at the wedding as a guest too
I'll probably come up with a few options and post them here. You girls are so great with this stuff!!!
