I have family coming in from CA and they want to go to the Met and the AMNA. If they paid the suggested amount for each museum, they'd be paying over $100.

Just curious what others do.

When I go with my 2 kids, I give $10 for all 3 of us.

We use the corporate membership which translates into nothing. I have also paid $10 per person.

Re: What do you pay when you go to the museums?

I used to pay the suggested donation every time but with the increases I have been thinking to stop doing this. I'd donate at least as much as the cost for any other recreational activity;. Now I have to decide which activity to compare it to. I think I'd give at least the price of bringing the group to the movies. Now to decide whether I am factoring in the popcorn at a movie....

As much as I feel comfortable with. Sometimes it's been $10-$15pp, sometimes it's been $5 for 3 of us. The suggested donations are getting to be a little ridiculous, IMO. I've also never gotten a judging stare or anything like that when paying less, if that helps.

I take my daughter to different museums every week. I am continually shocked by the cost of these museums. How are everyday families supposed to afford these educational opportunities? We go so frequently that I just ended up purchasing memberships to AMNH, NY Hall of Science, and the Bronx Zoo. The parking at AMNH costs $40 each visit even if you are a member!

We havent gone in a while but I would give what they ask- I would feel funny otherwise.

When you go to a private museum like Madame Tussaud's- its similarly priced and you can't just give less

I always pay suggested donation. I feel very uncomfortable paying less. The donations do keep going up, because people don't pay a fair price IMO

If they can't keep up with the rising costs of the museum, they shouldn't ask for a "suggested donation". They should just have a flat fee, period. No one should feel guilty, or be made to feel guilty, for giving whatever donation they want.

I don't really believe this at all. The museums have TONS of corporate and philanthropic sponsors.

Think about it, when was the last time you heard that MOMA or the Met was in desperate need of donations because of low attendance or people not paying the "suggested" amount? Pretty much never. They bring in plenty of money and that's why a donation is suggested instead of required.

I have paid both the suggested or less depending on what I can afford. But I have never felt bad for paying less than the suggested.

I feel like it's for people in the community that truly can not afford a flat price, like low income inner city families etc. we don't fall into that category so we pay full. To each his own

Do not feel bad about paying a donation. The donation programs were put in place so museums would be accessible to all families. If you want to pay full price then do it. If you want to pay less, do it. The most important thing is that you come and take advantage of these great institutions. Museums make money many different ways - admissions is only a small part of it.

One thing to note is at the Museum of Natural History if you choose to do any special exhibitions (i.e. planetarium, IMAX, temp exhibitions) you will have to pay full price for those. You cannot pay a donation. You can only donate for general admission.
