what did you need/want the day after having your dc?
our close friends just had a baby (their first via c-section) this morning. we went to see the baby this afternoon and are going back tomorrow afternoon to visit. they said they don't need anything, but i'm sure there is something they aren't thinking of/will want tomorrow/etc. what do you suggest? tia!

Food. GC to a t=restautant w/ delivery/ take out. Frozen meals that they can heat and eat.

ITA!!! If she is nursing, then nothing with tomatoes as that can cause the baby discomfort. But the best gift I got was meals from my friends after coming home from the hospital.

and a promise that you will clean her bathroom and kitchen in 2 weeks 
as first time parents, we found that there was no way to really prepare for how much things really did change.

I wish people brought me food! I try to make all new Moms I know something they can heat/freeze because I would have LOVED that!
Even in the hospital, the food wasn't awful, but I would have killed for a Snapple and an egg sandwich!

I wish people brought me food or giftcards....
il's would have brought takeout but we didnt have visitors the first 8 weeks

Food for sure....not so much in the hospital, but for when I got home. Def not able or any desire to cook when you get home, esp if you had a csection.

Food that can be heated from the freezer.
Bonus: if whatever you give them is cooked in throw away tins (no dishes to clean and no pressure to keep track of things to return to people).
Someone to come and clean the kitchen/bathroom 2 weeks or so later is great suggestion from PP. I would have LOVED that,

Yes - food! Food that is easy to freeze or will stay a day or two.

Also, someone to watch the baby while I slept (day or night). I was so sleep deprived for weeks after (especially after DH went back to work) sleep was what I wanted more than anything.

All of the above are GREAT suggestions! I 100% agree with food, really of any type! Freezer meals, things to "pick on" (cheese/cracker/sausage type things), a cut up fresh fruit platter if they like fruit. If you're close enough with them, I'd offer to come watch baby so mom and dad can sleep, or to help mom out at home after dad goes back to work (if that is the situation and she doesn't have other help). I know when DH went back to work after a week and I was MAJORLY sleep deprived, I would kill for someone to come and tend to the baby for an hour or two so I could just sleep or take a shower in peace!
