 | Re: SPINOFF: buying or leasing? I think we debated this last week
but for me- leasing- for many reasons

 1. short attention span - I always want something new

 2. cars are a pain to sell - and when you trade them in you never get close to what you owe/worth

3- Maintaince- the kinds of cars I like get expensive to fix after 5 or 6 years- my Dad told never to buy a Mercedes or other german car- always lease

I wish I bought - I want to get out of my lease in the worst way and am just afraid of losing money. The stupid car is not even a year old yet.

you would lose money after a year if you bought too- the trade in value would be alot less and why would someone want to buy a 1 year car

have you looked into lease trader- I can't do it with mine b/c I would still be liable but alot of car makers will let you transfer your lease

same here, I always want a new car after the 1st year and we usually are able to upgrade after a few years. i just got the 2007 Yukon and I already can't wait to get the XL version in 3 years! I do think leasing isa waste of $, but i will only buy a car if I know for sure it is a great car that is compatible with my family and needs.

Lot sof companies will get you out of your lease. My girlfriend had the Mercedes SUV and needed a larger car, and when she went to the caddy dealer they literally write a check to mercedes for the full amount to get her out of the lease (I guess they figure in the long run they will make $, plus they are 2 high end vehicles).
Some companies will also let you trade between cars under the maker, or they will pay a certain amount of months for you to get out of the car, We just went through this and we swallowed a big cost but it was worth it.

however there is a flip side that ia m learning you are stuck with the car for the durantion of the lease. so that can be a problem, but to go back to the flipside of buying yes you can sell the car but you are responsible for whatever goes wrong, and that can be $$$, It depends on how you are with money I think

 | Re: SPINOFF: buying or leasing? If we were in NYC still, we would lease. It makes the most sense, you get a new car every few years, everyone's happy. But because we live in GA we can't really lease...we drive too many miles a year (like 20K) and it's normal to have relatively new cars out here with 100K+ miles. So what we did was get cars that retain their value...we both own Honda's, they seem to have really high resales. The same goes with Volkswagen. |

 | Re: SPINOFF: buying or leasing? Buy - We drive too much to consider a lease and like not having a car note. Plus it's really not that serious to have a new car every 3 yrs. |

I currently lease but will probably not do it again because it is hard to come up with the downpayment every few years.

Never put any money down on a lease.

 | Re: SPINOFF: buying or leasing? I lease...every three years..
 Love having a new car
I can get into a new car with almost no money out of pocket (taxes and reg)
Lower monthly payment and I get to give it back before any problems happen.

I don't mind having the payment for peace of mind and no repair problems.

I also believe in renting things that depreciate and buying things that appreciate.

me neither- I paid the tax and I know I shpuldn't have- but the bank fee- I was going to argue- but I had just found out some devasting news and my mine was there

I rolled the rest into the payment- even if I bought I wouldn't put money down- I would rather a slightly higher payment and have my cash to do other things with-

edited- b/c I want to add that I have never seen my Dad buy a car cash- and he could certainly afford too- he puts down nothing but the tax and then does the new ballon payment thing or buys- he keeps his money making money for him- I try to do what ever he does- he retired from being a teacher at 55 with more then enough to live on nicely
