You are doing the right thing. Not only are you controlling the overpopulation of cats, you are helping him by preventing the risk of developing testicular cancer.
His behavior will be the same. He will probably be tired for a day or two, but he will def bounce back.

Well to quote my vet, males are easy "it is just snip, snip and he is done" Jack was practically himself as soon as I picked him up! I was shocked! Females take longer to bounce back to their normal selves.
ETA: I remember how stressed I was about it. I was tearing up when I dropped him off. It is a little scary, but it is a very standard procedure, so don't worry.
