What are the differences between powdered formula and ready to serve?
I'm sorry if this was already asked, but we are trying to decide which to use?

I found that the powder is easier to use when you are out and about. IMO... I just like using powder

Mainly convienence and price. RTF is easier and more expensive and powder is cheaper and takes a little bit mroe work. Although the formula my son is on doesn't come in RTF so we have no choice.

THANKS!! That's what I was thinking...re: it being cheaper. If I can't breast feed, then I think I'll go the powdered route. It's just a matter of determining which she will be able to use, Enfamil, Similac, Nestle Good Start.

Well, the hospital will give you either Enfamil or Similac usually and from the research I've done they are pretty much the same.
I've also heard that Good Start and Enfamil Gentlease are the most like breast milk.
I honestly don't mind the powder, especially since you don't have to worry about the powder going bad like you do once you open a bottle of RTF.

Thanks!! It's been 16 yrs since I've done this...so it's PRETTY overwhelming right now.
I know Whole Foods has their own organic stuff as well and I looked into that...but watch us end up using Enfamil..

Anyway - I use both.
I mostly use powder, but I always have a bottle or 2 of RTF hanging around just in case I ran out of pre-,ade bottles, DS is screaming, its 2 in the morning, and mixing is not an option. Then I get to have a little convenience for the next few bottles after, which is nice...
Advice - take as many of those little formula bottles they give your child in the hospital. We took a huge shopping bag of them almost everyday - we were set for almost a month!!!

I think the RTF has a thicker consistency than the powder. I also find the stains on clothes from RTF are harder to get out.

I didn't like RTF. It constipated him for some reason...the powder has just been better. And it isn't lumpy if you shake and mix really well, I never had a problem with that!

Actually RTF and Powder cost pretty much the same. A friend and I compared, when you add the cost of bottled water. Without bottled water it's maybe about $2.00 cheaper. We use RTF and recently tried at 8 months to switch to all the powder samples we have but it really upset her belly so we are sticking to RTF.

I'd probably try the powder sooner rather than later so that he doesn't get too used to the RTF texture and thickness, that seems to be an issue with babies.

Oh I hear you! That's why we tried to switch to the powdered samples cans we have $$$$$. I thought by now her system would be fine switching, but I guess not. Oh well...a few more months till no more formula for us!

I advise you to contact the formula companies and ask for samples.
Really!! DH did it with Similac. He emailed them that DS did not like the "competitor" and if they could send us a free sample can of Similac Advance. They replied that they would mail it to us. 
DH is VERY resourceful when it comes to saving money.
We also signed up with all the formula companies. And we got the bag from the hospital.
I BF but add to supplement a bit so the cans of formulas came in handy.

I also use the little nursette bottles as well if we are out

I was so excited to buy RTF last week (I found it in generic and cheap) and then I realized I hate it. It much darker than the powder and it stains EVERYTHING she spits up on. At least with the powder the spit up was very light, not brown like the RTF. And actually I remember all of her t'shirts were stained in the beginning when I was using the RTF bottles they send you home with from the hospital.

24 hrs if you refridgerate it right?

We use the Brita filter... and when I shake the formula, I use one of those closed cap things on the bottle to get all the lumps out...

I used the RTF. It was definatly more expensive and inconvienient but for some reason I just couldn't get the powdered formula to have no lumps.
