Re: What are Processed Foods &
you don't have to stay away from ALL processed foods IMO... but basically anything that comes in a box/can/bag with a list of ingredients is a processed food.
ETA: instead of eating Burger King French Fries... cut a potato into wedges, add some salt, pepper, garlic & extra virgin olive oil and bake them.
KWIM?
You want foods to be as close to their natural form as possible...

Re: What are Processed Foods &
A good rule of thumb is if your great great grandmother wouldnt have recognized it as food or cooked with it, its probably processed.

Re: What are Processed Foods &
all-righty-than!!! I will try to cut down on the processed foods.
Thank you all for your info and Kara, thanks for all the links. I'll read up on it. Very helpful!
Please I decided to look at some Nutrients on some of the places that I sometimes eat for lunch. Take Moe's for an example. Dear Lord! So many calories, sooooooo many fats & the sodium is so high. And I wondered why we couldn't get DH blood pressure under control.
Thanks for the education ladies, I will def. read up on it more.

Re: What are Processed Foods &
I end up spending a lot of time food shopping and going to different stores for what I need.
I read labels and then do the price thing.
It's time consuming but it's an investment in me.

Re: What are Processed Foods &
Usually non-processed foods line the outside of the supermarket. I rarely go to the "in-between aisles" with the exception of cereal aisle.

So how much more do you think you spend on the food? Do you buy organic?

What are processed foods? How I think of it: Anything that didn't 'live' at one time or you didn't make yourself...
Example: anything pre-packaged If you want to eat bread, you'd have to make it yourself
What’s NOT a processed food: Meats, fish, fruits, vegetables, nuts and anything you make with them
Reason: They contain unnatural ingredients and chemicals.
What they do to you: They cause an almost addictive behavior. You eat it and you want MORE. They are (typically) empty calories that do not satisfy you and do not help your body in any way.
When I stopped eating processed foods: I was less hungry all the time, I felt more satisfied after I ate, I was less tired, I lost 5 pounds (I was not TRYING to lose weight and I didn’t WANT to lose weight, it just happened). I actually think I eat more calorie wise, but it’s just ‘better’ foods and I work out less.
It’s not that you can never eat these things, it’s just MOST Americans ONLY eat processed foods… and I am not talking about restaurants at all, I’m talking about grocery store items.
Good resources: Education is the best resource!
MOVIES: Fat Head (I learned a lot from this one), Food Inc, and King Corn (all have websites you can visit)… actually here is fathead’s website: http://www.fathead-movie.com/index.php/about/

This is exactly the info I was looking for from your Kara! Thanks for posting this! Now, what about cheese and yogurt. There is a process going on there too...
