What am I doing?

Ok-

So here's the scoop...Ryan has started waking in the middle of the night again... He's not cranky, he's not hungry, he's just up... I really wanna link it to the teething...since it seems to happen on the days his teeth are bothering him the most...But then why is he in such a good mood when he gets up???

Anyways- what Ive been doing is getting him out of his crib..and eventually just putting him in my bed.... I know he cant go anywhere between Dh and me...so that way I can go back to sleep (since I gotta get up so early for work)

Im kicking myself because im giving off that msg. wake up in the mid of the night, and then you get to come and play/sleep in mommys bed...(He just lays between us and talks himself to sleep)

This is the age where he'll begin getting that msg...right?

What else can I do?

I put him to bed... as soon as he's tired...

I try to rock him 1st, and give him his binky...but he's up and wants to play!

Re: What am I doing?

Why not leave him in his crib? This morning Hayley decided to get up at 6am but she wasn't crying, she was "talking". After about 10 minutes she went back to sleep.

Maybe I am a horrible mommy but if she gets up early and is not crying, I leave her in the crib.

Re: What am I doing?

ugh I just wrote you the longest post and it got deleted by accident...blech.

Anyway - long story short...this is the same problem I was having with Talia...after weeks of sleeping with her (and barely sleeping) I reached my breaking point and let her CIO - in two days she was a different baby - so I have no regrets. (Now she sleeps 12 hours a night!)

I think you have to either let him CIO - or let him sleep with you - be ok with it and break the habit later. Talk to your dr. about it though.

Eta: if he isn't crying - leave him there - he'll probably soothe himself back to sleep.

Re: What am I doing?

Well, you know our story... Alex has been doing the same thing for weeks now and I've finally reached my breaking point! I've only been getting 3 hours of sleep per night and as a result, I've screwed up so many things at work that I'm sure I'm on the brink of getting laid off, and I'm so miserable and exhausted that I don't give Alex the playtime that she deserves, and I get way too impatient with her, so we've started to CIO with her. The first night was a miserable mess and she was so PO'd that she woke up every hour crying. But, last night we did MUCH better. She fell asleep within 15 minutes and slept better than she has in WEEKS. She woke up a few times in the night but put herself back to sleep (which was our goal!). I never though I'd let my baby CIO, but I think it's better that she learn good sleep habits and how to self-pacify, and at the same time, allow DH and I to get at least a little bit of rest so we can give her all the love and attention that she deserves while she's awake Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: What am I doing?

Hey, I am ALL for what works for you...I just have to share something.
When my neice was a baby, my sister would do the same thing you are...she'd wake in the middle of the night, my sister would have to get up for work in the morning so she'd take her in bed with her...yadda, yadda, yadda.
Fast forward 9 years, and me neice STILL comes into my sisters bed just about every night!
Now my sister is a pushover and lets my neice get away with it, but it can start bad habits.
Maybe try keeping Ry in his crib, and give him a bit of Tylenol if you think his teeth are bothering him, and see how it goes.

I agree with this...... have you tried leaving him in there?? I mean if he is just up and cooing and gaaing, why not see if he talks himself back to sleep??

I do the same thing with Gianna...if she is not crying I don't go in her room at all. Sometimes she will wake up at 2 or 3 am and sing, talk, play and even though I am up listing to her I don't go in and she goes back to sleep. I feel better knowing that I am not the only one doing this either because I do feel guilty doing this and wonder if I am doing the right thing. I just don't want her getting used to me coming in...she has always fallen asleep on her own and I don't want to ruin that.

That is why I don't go in, she goes to sleep on her own. I swaddle her and put her in her crib. Sometimes she is pretty much asleep and other times she is kinda sleepy but not really asleep. I put on some lullabye music and close the door.

Re: What am I doing?

We went through the its 3am and lets play thing for a little while with Jack and what worked for us was letting him come into bed with us for a little while until he woke about 6ish. Then I'd give him a bottle and put him back in his crib until he woke about 8am. This way he was learning to wake up in his crib to start his day. He eventually grew out of the 3 am waking...we'd let him cry somenights..

I think as long as you don't let him start sleeping with you as he gets a little order like 6-7 months or so, it should be ok.

Those few weeks or a month that Jack slept in our bed for a few hours didn't make him a bad sleeper. He goes down about 7:30 and wakes up at 7:30...15 months old

I know I'm in the minority here because I am not sleep training my daughter so I can't offer much advice but I can offer hugs Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Sleep deprivation is the worst. We were doing really well with her going down and staying down on her own with no crying and we seem to be back to waking up again and in bed with mommy again. My DH had to go into work late today because she was up at 3:30 and 5 and wouldn't go back to sleep. I needed to at least get an hour of sleep to function for the day. I hope it gets better. Hopefully its just teeth or growing pains.
