I used breathable bumpers. That seemed to keep their arms and legs out of the slats, but hot damn do they still whack their heads pretty hard.

Thank you for your input everyone, I think I'll just skip them. They're not worth the risk it seems.
My cousins baby banged her head pretty bad on her crib a couple months ago and she had to bring her to the hospital, so that's why I asked.
Have you considered wonder bumpers? I really love them!
