I am considering this one, despite the high price tag. I've heard good and bad about it, they give you a lot for the $$...medal, tech shirt, free beer, etc. Course is very flat, but TONS of turns, it basically loops Flushing Meadows Park a couple of times. The course map makes me dizzy, lol. It's been around for 3 years, from what I heard, the first year was somewhat unorganized, but last year was better. You also have the potential for flooding in that park, so they've dealt with the course dodging puddles on year.

Suffolk is basically no frills, but 1/4 of the price. The only thing I hear with Suffolk is if there is wind over 10mph, it can be extremely tough. Yet, I also hear that it's a great PR course, I know a few people who have a PR there. It's timed by FLRRT, so it's not as if it's no frills to the point where you don't know if the course is accurate.

I'm waiting to see the weather before I decide which to do, I'm being a bit of a wuss Chat Icon Probably won't be a PR for me, just a "warm-up" for a May half.

A few of my friends did this one last year so I went to cheer them on.... they loved it.
I was considering it (before I got injured), but I'm going to do the 15K in Kings Park instead, which falls on the same day. I'm working on getting my endurance back, so I'm not ready for a half just yet (going to do the LI half in May).

There is no Queens Half Marathon this year---instead its a 10k. NYRR confirmed this on their facebook page so if you want to do a half, I say go with the Suffolk county one!

I think you are confusing this half with the one that is usually held in July; the 13.1 (actually called "13.1 New York) is next weekend and is not put on by NYRR, it's a series that is held in a few cities.

The KP15k is my backup plan. I injured my it band running that last year so I am a little hesitant to run it again.

I feel the same way, LOL. Yeah May is when I am planning my "big" PR but I think I could PR now as well since I just ran the Caumsett 25k and at the 13.1 mark I was a few mins ahead of my half marathon time.

Is the Suffolk one super boring though? Thats what worries me.

Yes! You are right---didn't realize there was another one in Queens next weekend. Sorry!

Well....it's basically a loop of Nicoll's Road. That alone tells you there is nothing really to look at. I have never run it, but most say it is boring. I think I can deal with that, I would just look at the wind forecast for that day - the thing is, there is no protection from it, so if you get a North-South wind over 10mph, it can get rough. I think you would be fine with the boredom. What I found interesting is that more people ran this half last year than did Entenmanns. Probably because there were other halves the weekend of Entenmanns. $25 is a steal for a half, so I guess it comes down to weighing the pros and cons. I personally think the LI Half is boring, hence the reason why I now run the Brooklyn Half in May.

I kind of wanted to do the Queens one, but my friend cannot do it now, so I'd be going solo - I usually am fine with going to races alone, but I've never done this one and as well as I know the city, I always seem to get confused in that area near Citi Field!!

I did 13.1 NY last year. I really liked it, the medal is so nice! Plus it was really cool to run by the World's Fair monuments. I've always driven past that area, but never went there.

Re: What about the 13.1 half marathon in Queens. ANyone running this year?

My dad and husband did the Queens half marathon this past summer and I think its almost the same course as the 13.1 NYC half. There are some hills but nothing like the hills you find here in the smithtown/KP area. I watched the race and there are a lot of spots with people cheering you on. (But it was also the summer so I am not sure if it will be the same in March.)

You are more likely to smash your PR in the Suffolk half then in this one. But... my good friend ran the 13.1 NYC half last year and she said that you get a fun medal and there is a beer truck afterwards. THe suffolf half did not give medals to everyone last year.

Though choice!!
