Re: wet carpet from flood
do you have a fan that you can put so it blows on the area?
I sprinkle baking soda on my carpets to keep them fresh, but I think you might want to wait till its dry before doing that- it could get pasty- I dont know what you can do in the meantime, except maybe lysol?

Re: wet carpet from flood
i hate to say it but it is very hard to save carpet that has been soaked through. if there is a pad underneath then the pad has to be completely dry too and the floor underneath....wood or concrete.
If you are in an apt shouldn't the LL be hiring someone to come in and clean up?
A regular fan wont do the job....you need industrial stuff if it is more than just a puddle size area.

Re: wet carpet from flood
can gianni get industrial fans? there isnt much you can do otherwise. come stay at our house :) sophie has a crib to sleep in now! (and virtually everything else you could need).
maybe rent fans? when there was the water damage in the condos around us, they used industrial fans and it dried everything perfectly. the only problem with that is it dries the air badly, the dont suggest sleeping in a home with those fans going

Re: wet carpet from flood
How about those vacuums that suck up water?? I know my mom used that in her basement when it flooded. The vacuum that sucks up water + the fans made the carpet 100% dry.
HTH
P.S. I think you can rent one of those vacuums.

I was going to suggest the same thing and then use a fan after that. Home depot sell those water vacs.

Re: wet carpet from flood
It's probably too late to suck up much water, but if you have a wet/dry vac and suck it up right away, that helps. Next I would shampoo it--quickly! And I think you need to pull it up and see what the floor or padding look like underneath--if there is a pad that probably needs to be tossed.
Good luck!

Re: wet carpet from flood
You may need to remove it if its still wet from a few days ago.. But in the meantime you should probably rent one of those industrial fans to dry it...
I googled it and came up with this... Hope it helps!

Re: wet carpet from flood
Thanks for all the responses
We're moving very soon (bought a house in CT and are renovating) so the LL will pull out the carpet/sheetrock/doors after we go
We have a fan going on it now -- it's been going since like sunday at 1am and it hasn't helped at all. Im going to make DH go and get something (anything) else because the smell is killing me. I have sooo much clothes that I have to wash but cant because the washer/dryer dont work due to limited power supply so theyre starting to stink too. And the thing thats driving me insane is that this water backed from from the shower drain FROM THE SEWERS!!! Now, I know it was just access rainwater BUT still, just the thought makes me gag.

your LL has to do something if sewer water was in your apt. It is not safe for you to be there and the LL is opening himself up to a huge liability. I would seriously tell him he has to put you up somewhere.

Re: wet carpet from flood
Rug shampooer/steam cleaner. They are specifically designed to pull water out of carpet, and they are very good at it. You can either rent a Rug Doctor, or buy your own. Plus, you can use it to clean the carpet with shampoo.
But, like others have mentioned, it may be too late.
