I love Westchester - It's beautiful.....
There are many nice towns - my favorite is Larchmont. It is very expensive. It seems to be more expensive than LI.

Re: Westchester?
That's the way to go Beth! Westchester and CT are AWESOME options! A friend/co-worker recently moved to CT...she bought a wonderful house - inexpensive too! Can't beat New England! Good luck!

Re: Westchester?
Beth, keep in mind that Westchester was just named as one of the top five places with the highest propery taxes in the country. You might get more for your $$ if you looked just over the border in Putnam County. HTH

It seems to be more expensive than LI.
It is, for the most part.
On LI, ther seems to be more of a variey. There are very few places in Westchester where houses start at less than $550, 000.
If you are lookignat co-ops, you have more options.
There are very few places I'd tell you to avoid though. Parts of New Rochelle are nice, some are awful, but the SD is awful, as is the Mt.Vernon SD-if that is an issue for you . Larchmont & Mamaroneck are nice & on the water-- I think less expensive than Rye. Portchester isn't great.
Towns on the Hudson, like Tarrytown, are a kinda far frpm CT.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
ETA- I have lived in Westchester for 6 years -Mt. Vernon, Scarsdale & am moving to Hartsdale & DH's family has lived here for about 22 years.

Its north!
Is living in Stamford out of the question? I think there are affordable & nice parts.
White Plains in close to Stamford. Again, houses are , but there are many co-ops there. There are some not so nice parts of White Plains but most of it is nice. That's not near the water though.

It is Northeast, so that should work for you and your DH. Yorktown Heights and Brewster are BEAUTIFUL.

Isn't that still Westchester? I love Yorktown heights, though.

Re: Westchester?
My cousin works in Stamford and she lives in Orangeburg/Old Tappan. It's NJ but it's an easy commute for her. Beautiful area.
Orange county may be a good move too. You will get lots o house for your money. My cousin is a realtor up there.
Eastchester, some parts of Dobbs Ferry and New Rochelle. Mamaroneck is a very old city but really nice.

Re: Westchester?
The lower parts of CT are closer (or the same distance) than a lot of Westchester town ... you should definitely look into miles and commute times for all of them. Westchester is pretty far north

Tarrytown and Mt. Vernon are nice too.
IMO I would be very careful with Mount Vernon.
