Re: west islip?!

I like West Islip a lot. It has good schools and is right by the beaches. For the most part, the neighborhoods seem really nice and people take pride in their homes. It's a town my DH and I are considering as well.

Re: west islip?!

I live in West Islip, renting the top floor of a house. I don't have kids yet so I can't speak for the schools, but my neighbors seem happy enough. The location is my favorite aspect of it - we're 5 minutes from Babylon Village and all the shopping and restaurants there, 10 minutes from Robert Moses Beach, and all the chain stores are in Bay Shore really close by (Best Buy, Pier 1, Target, Barnes & Noble, etc). There is never any traffic on any of the roads/highways, almost every single block in the whole town is clean and safe, and when you walk or jog around the neighborhood people are pretty friendly. Oh, and the library is fantastic, if that's important to you.

We didn't choose to buy in West Islip, though. I grew up in Brooklyn and West Islip is just a little small and homogenous for me. I'll FM you the specifics if you want. But that's just my personality - I'm sure most people would be really happy to buy here.

Dh and i just bought in WI 2 years ago.. myself being a Brooklyn girl it took some time to get used to(just LI in general). i have adapted very well.. thelibrary is definalty awsome.. even though my dd doesn't go to school yet.. from what i hear from neighbors the school district is excellent.

Shopping is very convienient..

Re: west islip?!

My brother lives there and has for 11 years. My oldest nephew graduated the high school last June and I have a niece in the jr high and a nephew in one of the elementary schools. It's an excellent district and I know my brother and SIL are extremely happy there.

The only issue we ever saw with it is how unbelievably homogeneous it is (it's nickname is "White Islip"). If you don't mind that, it's a great place to raise a family.

Re: west islip?!

We live in W. Islip and my husband works in Mineola. He needs to be there by 7 AM so he leaves about 40 minutes earlier. Even by 6:20 AM there's a decent amount of traffic, esp. by the 135 and the Meadowbrook. His commute home at 4 PM takes between 45 minutes and an hour. On days that he works a little later, it takes an hour or more.

This is one of the reasons we're moving farther west soon - he's so sick of the commute!

ETA: Oceanside might be a little easier because you don't have to go north at all. Sunrise Highway is a quick 15 minutes to Massapequa from W. Islip (that's where I get off), and from Massapequa to Oceanside early in the morning... what, another 25 minutes? The trip home in the afternoon/evening won't be pretty either way though.

West Islip is really nice. Good schools, near the water. My aunt lived there for several years and there are some very nice neighborhoods.

There might be a way you can take the Robert Moses to Ocean Parkway and head to Oceanside that way. Usually no traffic that way (maybe some in the summer).
