Re: Welcome Colin James!

Thank you so much everyone! Here's some of the gory crazy details of his birth (lol it's not that bad):

My water broke on Tuesday morning around 3 am. Labor started on its own around 4 am and I was having contractions about 5-6 minutes apart starting at 4:30. I spoke to the midwife on call and she said to just labor at home which I did for a few hours but then my contractions were closer to 3-4 minutes apart so she said to come in. I got to the hospital around 7:30 am and they verified that my water did, indeed, break and my OB checked me around 8 am and I was only at 3 cm and 90%. (Which is what I was with Megan for like 2 weeks before she was born!) So we walked around for a while, sat on the yoga ball, etc, etc, and contractions were like 2-3 minutes apart for several hours. 11 am, he checked again and still 3 cm but finally fully effaced. 2 pm my OB came back and said if I was still at 3 cm he wanted to start pitocin because we were coming up on 12 hours since my water broke. I went through a mini dilemma over what to do because we had really hoped to go natural again but for some reason the contractions were way more painful this time than with my first birth. And yet they weren't doing anything! So I spoke to my best friend (she had been induced a month after DD was born) and my SIL (she had her first with an epidural and second without) and DH and I discussed our options with several nurses at the hospital and we finally decided to get the epidural (since I'd need an hour of fluids first anyway) before I got the pitocin started, and they said they'd check me before we started pitocin after the epidural.

After the hour of fluids (which I really needed -- my BP is already so crazy low and I had been seeing stars all day), I was at 5-6 cm, which was great, but my pain level went from 8s during contractions to what I rated around a 5, which I could handle. It was just after 3 pm then. Since I was progressing well at that point, I didn't need the pitocin!! I was SO RELIEVED. I guess of the choices for intervention, we felt the epidural was less invasive than pitocin. Things were moving so fast, he didn't even give me the full dose for the epidural and I could move around pretty well the entire time (I also felt a lot of pain, but it was all right on my pelvis and not as much in my abs and back anymore). I could still feel contractions. My midwife came in at 4 pm and we did some movement techniques in the bed to get the last .5 cm to dilate on one side where there was a little extra cervix left. As soon as that happened, it was time to start pushing and since I could feel contractions, I just pushed with each one. She decided to cut me because I had a lot of scar tissue from my episiotomy last time, so she cut in the same spot so I wouldn't tear, which worked out great and recovery has been a lot easier than from the tear. I started pushing around 4:45 and Colin was born at 4:57 pm. For the record: I hate delivering the placenta. Yuck.

Some cool things: with DD, my OB just cut the cord (we didn't really have a preference) but since it was the midwife there, she left the cord intact until it finished pulsing and then I encouraged DH to cut it, which he did. Chat Icon They put the baby on my chest immediately before cleaning him off, which was cool.

So his stats: Colin James, born 10/2/12, 4:57 pm, weighing 6 lbs 7 oz, 19.25 inches. My little guy. Chat Icon He's really beautiful and has a lovely "boy" head of hair. Chat Icon DD loves the "beebee." Chat Icon I came home Thursday, 10/4! He was 6 lbs 5.3 oz when we left the hospital and 6 lbs 2.5 oz today at the ped, but he's doing great and they expect him to gain by our next appointment Monday. DD lost so so so much weight the first two weeks, so this is such a relief and I am a zillion times happier.
