Weight loss
Any success stories here for the over 40 crowd?
I did Optavia last year and lost a lot of weight. I went off of it, maintained and then with the non-stop activity of the summer, I put on some weight. I have been exercising and eating high protein, low carb, low fat but am not seeing much action on the scale. I want to lose 20 lbs and I will be happy.

You've done it and maintained it. 20 pounds' isn't a lot. I would be mindful of the amount of calories in the high protein and low fat foods. I was putting on weight until I realized it was from walnuts, that I kept mindlessly eating, because it was "so good" for me. I find Chobani 0 fat yogurt gives me the protein but not the calories. Try cutting a part of what you're eating out. Contrary to much advice, I do weigh myself everyday and record it. It make me more aware and accountable. Good Luck

I just lost 10 lbs. I use my WW point system from 2001 and it still works. I also do Kettle Bell which has made me stronger and toned up. Lots of veggies and less carbs and sugars.
I am over 50.

Re: Weight loss
you will lose weight if you decrease calories no mater from where, and increase activity. I've done it. During covid all i did was exercise. Nothing else to do. I keep it up. I lost 20 lbs. Also, eating out only once a month. otherwise eating salads/grains. Full disclosure: i'm vegetarian
keep in mind, it takes time. it didn't go on in a few months, it will take time to come off.

Weight loss
On Monday 9/11, I reached my goal of 90 lbs lost!!!! YAY!! 335 days to reach my goal.
I do not care what anyone says, you have got to shut your mouth! 85% of weight loss is what we put into our mouths. Now, please do not get me wrong, I also walked and walked and walked and then walked some more - every day.
When I plateaued months ago, I did add in Berberine, Tumeric and Super B complex. These three items together have a weight suppressant component that I believe really helped and got me to my goal weight.

Re: Weight loss
You need to be in a calorie deficit to lose weight, you can eat whatever you want, but you have to count calories. One pound is 3500 calories. So burn an extra 500 calories a day, beyond what you intake, and you lose a pound a week, etc. Get a fitbit to track your steps. You don't need to do heavy exercise, walking is sufficient. You would be surprised at how many calories are in stuff we eat everyday. Portion control is a huge part.

Wow!!! Congratulations! That is a lot of hard work and perseverance. You must feel so good.
And you are correct. Can't work out a bad diet.
Regarding the supplements, was there a specific brand you would recommend?

Thank you so much - it was not easy! Seriously portion control and stopping snacks and desserts really helped. I never not ate what I wanted to, just smaller portions. I also severely limited eating out - portion size is out of control. I make dinner home now, ordering meals that I have to make for myself from Every Plate where I control the size and what we eat.
As far as the supplements, I do buy everything on Amazon. I don't know how to add a picture but for Berberine - I take Nutrivein Berberine 1200mg Tumeric - I take Spring Valley 500mg B Complex - I take Nature's Made with C and Folic Acid
I do also take a liquid collagen made by Spoiled Child

Re: Weight loss
What kind of exercise are you doing? People think you have to do cardio everyday. But all you need to do is 20-30 minutes of strength training each day, and have a day off. You will burn more fat. I have a schedule each day of what muscles I want to target each day. The key is also to give your body a day off to recover. I also do kickboxing 4x a week. I dropped a good amount of weight for people to notice at work. Like others said, you have to watch what you eat. Stay away from these fad "no carb" diets. You need good carbs in your diet.

For me, I did make a huge mistake in not strength training. Truthfully, after the 90 pound weight loss, I am left with some sagging skin that I now cannot help but wonder if it would have been minimized had I done more then just walking.
Regardless, I will take the saggy skin and weight loss over being heavier

Re: Weight loss
So I'll tell you a little story about my husband. He lost 100 lbs doing strict clean Keto. He was convinced he had all these issues that allowed him to only lose weight by drastically restricting carbs. (insulin resistance, etc) He was all in on that lifestyle. He didn't have a slice of pizza or a piece of bread for 2 years.
Then he started doing some research and following a guy who has a PhD in nutritional science who said weight loss comes down to one thing- thermodynamics. Basically a fancy way of saying calories in/calories out. Burn more than you eat and you'll lose weight. You can literally eat a snickers bar for breakfast, one for lunch and one for dinner and you'll drop weight. (you won't be healthy and of course nobody would recommend that but you will lose weight).
So now he maintains his weight loss by simple calorie counting. He's strict about it- tracks everything he eats on his myfitnesspal app. He has it down to knowing his body so well that he knows if he wants to drop a few pounds how many calories he has to cut to do that. Once you figure out your basal metabolic rate- you will know how many calories you personally need to eat to maintain or lose weight- and how many calories per day will make you gain weight. Add in some exercise and you'll be in even more of a deficit.

This was the best WW plan they had - but I think they changed it as some of the lower point options were not so healthy lol - but I find it worked better than the newer plans as it was more of a caloric intake measure - now they have a lot of free foods but you need to balance how much you eat.

Very smart strategy- it doesn't need to be complicated gimmicky.

This is so true. I lost around 40 lbs. but Optavia does not want you working out doing their 5:1 plan so, even though I always worked out, I stopped. Despite all the weight loss, I noticed that some clothes still didn't fit right around my lower tummy area and actually in some ways looked worse. Now that I have added working out back into my routine, I feel like my clothes look better despite being up 15 lbs or so.
As for work outs, I do the beach body ones. Right now I am doing Lift 4 which I like a lot. Its weight training and HIIT. I will try to go walking too some nights when I have time.

I'm back on MFP too. It's very helpful. I had done fairly well on keto but my cholesterol went through the roof so I stopped doing that. I wasn't doing it right...I was living on a lot of cheese.

Yeah it's truly calorie counting. Carbs/fat/protein don't matter as much. However you do want to eat foods that are high volume for the calories- that is why my DH eats such high protein- because protein fills you more than carbs. Eat a bowl of cereal and you are still starving for the 200 calories- eat an egg with some cottage cheese etc - you are fuller longer for the same calorie count. My DH doesn't avoid carbs anymore but he never eats pasta- reason being a 200 calorie serving of pasta is TINY. You get more bang for you buck with other things

I agree with this but it IS easier for men to lose weight and they lose it faster then women. My husband lost 17 lbs in a week one time from just not drinking any soda.

Yes. I basically find you need to eat serving sizes. That is what helps the most.

I find the biggest thing is serving size. People do NOT eat the allotted serving size and that is why they can't lose weight. Pasta is only a cup if even that. You know how much they serve you in a restaurant and how much you put on your plate at home. A cup is NOT a lot so I supplement with veggies to help out.

It depends. my DH has to really watch every single calorie he eats and goes to the gym constantly.
I've been going through a lot of anxiety lately and I've been dropping weight like crazy because I haven't been eating as much as usual. (I'm actually trying to put weight back on at this point because it's annoying) I don't exercise either.
My DH has a VERY hard time losing weight. He struggled his whole life and only recently with tons of work has he gotten to a good place. His whole family has weight struggles. Now my DD went to the doctor and they are worried because she lost 2 pounds since last year. I told them I was the same way as a kid. So I think it's genetics too

So I think it's genetics too
Yes I agree genetics play a big part too.
