Weight gain (my update)

How often do you weigh yourself?

I do not own a scale and really don't want to buy one (I had past eating disorders & swore I would never buy one again). But I am concerned that I am gaining too much or too little.

Should I just wait for each Dr visit to know if the gain is normal?

ETA: I feel like I have more of a belly than I should for only 9wks. But that could be just me feeling jiggly since I have not been able to work out for a month.

UPDATE: Turns out I have not gained any weight yet. I guess it's me just feeling sedentary!

Re: Weight gain

I try to step on my scale every week/week and a half and note my weight in my planner so I can keep track of it. Plus, this way I get to do it first thing in the morning and naked - and I like the number better than at the MD's office Chat Icon

Re: Weight gain

i weigh myself almost every morning - but it's because dh and i have made it into a game. we each guess my weight and bet against each other for like a 15 minute massage or something. we are also betting on when i will outweigh him. for some reason we get a huge kick out of watching the number on the scale grow!

okay, writing that down made me realize how silly we are Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

if you've had weight issues in the past, i wouldn't buy a scale - i feel like it might lead you down the path of obsessing over the weight change. your doctor will let you know if there is too much or too little gain - in the meanwhile, i would enjoy getting bigger to nourish your little one! Re: Weight gain

alexlynn7 that is a cute game!

I really am trying to really eat healthy and get a variety of all good stuff for the growing baby. I guess you are right and will leave it up to the dr to tell me.

How often do you typically go for dr visits?

Re: Weight gain

I don't weigh myself at all (and we have a scale). I wait until the doctor weighs me at my appts. I like to keep it consistent. No need to freak every week about a lb up or down.

Re: Weight gain

Nope, don't ever weigh myself. And when they weigh me at the doctor, I try not to look!

I feel like if they thought there was an issue, they would tell me.

Plus, this is the one time in my life I am not really concerned about my weight. I am just enjoying being pregnant!

at first my appts were once a month, and then at 28 weeks they become once every two weeks.

jms, good point - one of the things i've noticed weighing myself every day is that there are constant fluctuations in my weight depending on fluid intake, what i ate the day before, etc. that's what makes the game fun for dh and i, cause you never really know what the scale will say. but this is also the factor that could drive you nuts if you let yourself become preoccupied with weight...

Please try not to worry about your weight. Just focus on eating healthy.

If you're only 9 weeks, your stomach is probably very bloated (people swore they knew I was pg that early because my belly got so round). You will have a dr appt every 4 wks until about 30 wks & then it changes into every 2 wks

As long as your dr is comfortable with your weight, you are doing good

Re: Weight gain

we have a scale, but I don't weigh myself. I don't like the number it brings up. I wait for the Dr's visit, then convince myself that my weight is really like 30lbs less than they tell me Chat Icon .

it's nice to hear how others have handled it.

I think I am being health, so I guess I will stop worrying and just keep it up and just wait for the dr visits.

Re: Weight gain

I weighed myself once at home and then after going to the doctor I realized my scale is totally off (I don't even remember in which direction, but I think it said I weigh more than I actually do) so now I don't bother.

Re: Weight gain

I do it once a week, and I have to say, even for someone without an eating disorder, it's easy to get a bit obsessed with this during pregnancy.

It's probably best if you get weighed at the doctor's office if this is a concern to you. You should be going monthly, and it sounds as if that will give you all the feedback you need. If you are eating healthy portions of food, you should be fine. And I wouldn't worry about weight gain during the first trimester--a lot of it is probably bloat. I gained 12 pounds 1st trimester which is a bit much, but very little for most of the 2nd, so I'm still where I should be now. Everyone is different.

Re: Weight gain

I weigh myself everyday but I have always done that. I am not stressing about the weight I gain but I want to make sure I am gaining the right amount of weight. I recently lost 50lbs and don't want to use the pregnancy as an excuse to eat everything in sight. Just trying to be healthy.

My DH has hid my scale for the past year because I became obsessed so I just wait until I see the doc and then I ask them not to tell me the weight, just if I lost or gained. It keeps me a little sane.

Re: Weight gain

I have always been VERY weight consious, though I never had an eating disorder per say. I did not have a scale, and never got on it. I try to eat healthy and make sure i get my nutrition - and also try not to eat desserts, and thats all I can ask for.

My DH always says, as long as you are eating - and not starving yourself - you are doing fine with weight. You shouldn't be concerned so much with weight gain/ weight loss, just eat when you are hungry and try to eat healthier. Not ice cream and donughts everyday.

I follow that advice, and eat healthy when I am hungry, and snack with either fruit or soy chips. My I am already 24 weeks, and my dr. isn't concerned with my weight.

I think you should do the same. Not worry so much of gain / loss, but just make sure you are eating healthy and when needed. Don't starve yourself.

Thats my 2 cents.

Re: Weight gain

I don't. I have always been lucky in that I never have to watch my weight, and I'm tall. I get weighed at the Dr's office, if he's worried I figure he'll tell me. Im 11 w tomorrow and don't fit into any of my pre-pregnancy pants other than sweat pants. I eat when I'm hungry or nauseous. Honestly I would try not to worry about it, as long as you are healthy. My Dr also said that bloating is normal in 1st trimester and it will go down. I have scales in the house but I'm not getting on them Chat Icon

Re: Weight gain

I do not own a scale and so I only get weighed at the doctors office. I think I would make myself crazy seeing the numbers climb more often than that.
