Re: Weight gain? How much is normal?

If this makes you feel any better, here goes...

With 1st DC, I ate super healthy and worked out until 7 mos and gained 45lbs (most in the third tri when I stopped working out).

With 2nd DC, I gained at least a pound a week, obviously more during certain periods because I gained exactly 50lbs. I was sick the whole time and eating whatever tasted good.

I lost it faster with #2. Relax and know that it will come off. I'm not sure what size you were to start but I'm convinced I gained so much more because I started out very small.

I gained around 16 lbs and I'm only 16 weeks. Does this even sound normal? I was freaking out all weekend. I eat well and exercise regularly. I haven't over ate either. It just doesn't make any sense. I know your supposed to gain weight for a healthy pregnancy but this much, so fast? At this rate I'll gain 50 lbs for my whole pregnancy. Did any of you gain this fast? I hope this slows down!!!Chat Icon

Your beautiful kristin. Breathe.

thanks Doreen! I'm trying! LolChat Icon

Please don't worry. I am 39 weeks and 2 days today. I gained 53 pounds. I'm 5'11'' and have never been bigger than a size 6 in my prep-preggo life -- so 53 pounds is hard to accept but my body did it -- i didn't eat a ton or do anything different- it just happened. The 1 pound a week thing is an average and not something to judge by - my doctor has repeatedly told me that. I had some trouble accepting the weight at first but now that I am at the end I realize my baby is doing well and I will get back in shape. Too many women stress and try to stick to 25-35 pounds. Everyone is different. I have friends who gained 50 pounds and one year post baby are thinner than they ever were.

Kristin, I am 16 weeks, too. I have been a size 2 for awhile now. I have gained 13 pounds in 16 weeks. So, I'm not far behind you. Think of the extra fat as cushioning for the baby. Chat Icon

Do you have a baby bump yet or do you feel like you're gaining it everywhere, but your tummy? I just "popped" this weekend. Up until now, I've felt like I've only gained in my hips, butt, and chest, but now my tummy is getting larger.

I'm a size 2 also!!!!!! Maybe that's why I'm gaining so fast. I definitely feel better knowing I'm not the only one gaining this fast.

Yes I do have a bump. I popped around 14 weeks. I only have a belly. Thats the plus side; I haven't gained much anywhere else.

In theory: During your first trimester, you should gain between 2 and 4 lbs.. Thereafter, you should be gaining 1 lbs. per week until the end of your pregnancy. (my doc actually says .5 pounds a week)

Now...every person is different. I gained like 3 pounds in the first tri and it was very steady, then toward the mid/end of the second tri, I had a period where I gained 7 pounds in 4 weeks....it ebbs and flows. Right now, I'm 32 weeks and have gained about 21 pounds. I could gain 5 more, or 10 more. It's a lot of water, blood volume, baby, placenta--there are many factors. Also, try not to weigh in so much. I do once a week, and when I go to the doctor, I don't pay much attention to her scale. Why? It's usually late in the day, I've eaten, had water, etc. I do once a week, first thing in the morning. If you were very tiny before getting pregnant, which you seem, it is possible to gain more. Also, 16 weeks is early and I recall still being fairly bloated--almost like menstrual weight.

See this is what makes me nervous, because if this is the case I've gained an abnormal amount of weight even
though I eat right and exercise. It's frustrating and that's why I'm so bummed out over it.

I never weigh myself. This was the first time after being pregnant that I have. I wasn't much of a weighed myself.

I just hope this is normal because while I was tiny before I was never underweight. Im definitely going to talk to my doctor.

This is NOT the case and please do not even go by it.

You have ZERO control over your weight gain. The baby needs what it needs and your body does what it's supposed to do to help the baby grow. Some people gain ten pounds. Some gain 50. DO NOT WORRY ABOUT A NUMBER! Focus on the amazing thing that is happening. You will lose the weight after becasuse you want to.

ITA with everything Amy said. Do not get hung up on a number. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Weight gain? How much is normal?

I am not going to flame you for being concerned with your weight gain, however I think that since everybody is different every person gains differently and there is not real normal. I am sure you are beautiful so please don't compare yourself to others!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

As for myself I am a plus size woman and start out on the heavy side. Since I have been eating better and am more aware of what I am eating I have lost 19lbs and am 19 weeks. I was very concerned about this, however my Dr told me not to worry as my baby is striving and growing approriately. He measures exactly to my due date.

Please cherish every day !!!

Re: Weight gain? How much is normal?

Kristin- stop looking at the scale!! You are beautiful and were very tiny before pregnancy, so your body has to put on some weight initial so that you can carry a baby. It's totally natural.

I didn't gain any weight in the first trimester ( had terrible morning sickness) and didnt even "pop" until after 20 weeks but my body made up for it in the last half of the pregnancy and I'm now 5 days away from my due date and up 35 lbs.

As much as it sucks looking at the number on the scale, since I was an avid runner and in the best shape of my life before pregnancy, I know that my body is doing what it needs to do for my LO.

Hang in there, you will bounce back!! I personally can't wait to go for my first run post pregnancy...I'm sure you will be the same wayChat Icon

Re: Weight gain? How much is normal?

You just cant worry about it.

I think a lot of it is genetic. Some people gain way more then average, some people way less

Honestly, I would stop asking and/or stepping on the scale!!
