Week from Hell
My 8 week old DD was acting a little off last week. On Thursday, she woke up and felt warm. I took her temp and it was 102. She would scream inconsolably not eating much (she's EBF). I called her Dr and were told to come in an hour later. After examining her, we were sent to Stony Brook Pediatric ER for full septic workup. They took blood and urine (through catheter ) and did an analysis and then sent off for cultures. Results came back negative for UTI but high white blood count and low sodium levels. Based on the initial analysis results, they did a spinal tap . My poor little peanut.
She was admitted and wouldn't be released until blood, urine, and spinal fluid cultures were all negative after 48 hours. Seeing my little baby so sick and with an IV in her arm killed me. They gave her fluids to make sure she was hydrated b/c she wasn't really eating. Then she got IV antibiotics in the ER and again the following 2 days while we were on the pediatric floor. She was finally fever free on Saturday. Her cultures also came back clear of bacteria after 48 hours. There was some bacteria in urine culture but not enough to be a UTI, so they assume it was some type of virus.
While in the hospital, I started to get an earache in my left ear and noticed what I thought were a couple of pimples on my left cheekbone. Didn't really think too much of it b/c I was so concentrated on my daughter. They finally released us Saturday night and I called my Dr. to make an appt. for Sunday to get checked out. Turns out…I have Shingles! To make matters worse, my husband is away on business, he left at 4am yesterday and will be gone for the week. Luckily my mom is staying with me because I really need to take it easy and rest, so she is helping out with DD. Seems like we just can't catch a break this week!
I have to say the staff at Stony Brook was amazing. Everyone we met, from the ER to the pediatric floor, were so nice and attentive. If we needed something, they helped us right away. They gave me a breast pump to pump while I was there. I was an emotional wreck and they were comforting and understanding. I wouldn't hesitate to bring my DD there again in the future…but hopefully I won't have to!

Week from Hell
That must have been so scary. Glad your LO is better and I hope you get through the shingles quickly. Two relatives of mine both recently had it and it was rough. Hopefully things calm down for all of you very soon!

Thank you ladies. I am hoping the shingles doesn't get too bad. As of now, it's tolerable.

Re: Week from Hell
poor little peanut! could it be that perhaps she was exposed to the chicken pox virus? i wonder if you have to watch out for that with her.
FEEL BETTER SOON! I can't imagine dealing with that and a newborn! - my husband had it and he was miserable!!!!
