Watering the lawn

What time do you water the lawn? DH insists that the lawn get watered during the day...I think we should wait until at least 5pm before turning it on, so it's not evaporating in this heat. We do not have inground sprinklers.

Re: Watering the lawn

we have inground sprinklers and we water before the sun comes up.

you should either do it in the early morning or early evening. Never when the sun is the hottest. The water evaporates too quickly and doesnt get down to the roots when its too hot out.

Re: Watering the lawn

The best time to water is early morning (say between 3-6am) or in the evening.

We don't have inground sprinklers either so last year we got the Automatic Yard Watering System. The best investment we ever made for our lawn! We set it for 2 zones (you can have up to 4): Zone 1 waters the front for 1 hour starting at 4am Mon-Wed-Fri. Zone 2 waters the backyard at 5am for another hour on Mon-Wed-Fr.

All our watering is done before we even get up! NOTE: You don't want to water at night because that can lead to mushrooms.

Re: Watering the lawn

It was suggested to us that watering during the day can do more harm than good cause the water gets dried up from the heat and can kill the plants, etc.

So, we water in the evening btw 7-8pm.

Re: Watering the lawn

we water mostly 5-7pm.

If you water during the day you can use up to 10 times more water than you need due to evap..also, the water will not get to wear it needs to go.

especially in 100 degree heat.

So we're all wrong including the experts and landscapers?

Re: Watering the lawn

I agree with everyone, either early morning or early evening. No afternoons or late nights.
