Watching TV at daycare, what do you think?

I spend a lot of time at Hofstra for my job. I am sitting here in a lounge and the daycare just brought a group of kids in and turned the TV on to Sesame Street.

Given the high cost of Hofstra's daycare, I don't feel they should be having the children watch TV in daycare.

I should point out that I am always shocked when I see how the daycare here practices. I see them around campus all the time, kids crying all the time, no one paying attention to them, one of the teachers is sitting with her cell phone out right now, just checking her phone instead of watching the kids.

I send DD to a family group daycare. They have a TV mounted to the wall, and it is on in the background most of the time. I don't love it, but they also don't sit the kids down to watch TV as an activity. It's just on while they are playing in the main room. Most of the time, when I get there to pick up DD, none of the kids are even paying any attention to it. I really do think it's unnecessary though.

I am not against watching TV, I probably let my kids do it too much. But I feel like for the amount of money you pay for a place like Hofstra ($1600+ per month), your kid should be doing more than walking around campus and watching TV.

I would be more upset that the teacher is on their cell phone than the tv being on.The teachers should be paying attention the children not her phone.

I wouldn't want my child to be watching tv all day but I wouldn't have a problem with one episode of sesame street a day.

Doesn't bother me. My daycare turns the TV on sometimes for the kids. Sesame Street is an educational show, at least!

I am not anti-tv by any means but, I get upset when I find out DS watched Dora at daycare... Like you, I feel for the price I pay, they should be doing other things.

I used to work in DC and we had a tv on a wheely cart with a video player. We would only pull it out if it went along with the lesson, like the dentist coming in or something, and Sometimes on a rainy day, especially if it had been raining for like a week straight. It was a treat and most of the kids still played in the classroom.

For those occasions I don't mind, but I would not want it on all the time.

It wouldn't bother me as long as it was a small part of the day. If they are doing other activities throughout the day but watch TV for a small part of that day then I don't see the big deal. Now if they have the kids planted in front of the TV ALLLLLLLL day long, yes, I would have a BIG issue with that. As long as it's moderated I think it's ok.

Re: Watching TV at daycare, what do you think?

Tv on for the kids during times of the day is fine as long as the majority of the time the kids are playing, learning, dancing, etc.
The old daycare where my boys went they had it on in the morning before classes start while some had breakfast and classes weren't divided yet. Then at around 8:30ish it was off for morning routine. I think it goes on again in the afternoon before lunch or nap time while the teachers set up their lunch and mats and then in the late afternoon to clean up and while most kid's start leaving.
Shows are always age appropriate. Some learning, some just music stuff or kid cartoons like Dora or something.

As a SAHM, I am absolutely guilty of having the TV on too much sometimes. But as a former FTWM who paid a lot for day care, if DD was in front of a TV at all during the day, I would be pissed!

I'd be way more upset about my child being neglected while the teacher was playing on their phone rather than a little sesame street

I don't see a problem with it, as long as they weren't parked in front of it all day. It's a nice diversion, a nice way to have some quiet time in between activities, etc.

This type of thing I wouldn't mind. A little video or show that corresponded to the lesson would be fine with me. But allowing them to watch TV just for the sake of TV would not be ok with me. And certainly not any regular TV watching, like once a day.

I would be annoyed at the TV and the phone thing. I agree, that for the price of these daycares you would expect the staff to have the kids playing with toys, going to the playground, doing crafts, singing songs, learning colors and shapes, etc. and NO tv!

I'm not anti-tv at home, but in a daycare situation, especially a center like Hofstra as opposed to small, in-home daycare, I would not expect to see a tv.

Re: Watching TV at daycare, what do you think?

The responses are confusing to me because DC goes to a small licensed home daycare and the owner told me that she isn't allowed to have the TV on during the day. They only use it to play music but it's not for watching.

ETA - The teacher on her phone would be totally unacceptable!!! That's how accidents happen and kids get hurt.

I agree.
DD watches TV all the time at home
But I am paying my daycare a TON of cash for her to go there so I would expect them to be entertaining her- not the TV
My daycare has no TV watching.
What would bother me even more is what you said about them all over campus, teachers not paying attention etc
No way would I be ok with that

I'm not anti TV - my kids watch plenty.

But I'll be damned if I'm spending $2500 a month for 3x a week for you to sit my kid in front of the TV. NO WAY !!!

Watching TV at daycare, what do you think?

I definitely wouldn't want DS watching tv constantly at daycare. Don't get me wrong, I'm a tv junkie myself and he does watch Sesame Street at home on the weekends. But like pp's have said, I pay a lot of $ for daycare and I wouldn't want tv to be a daily activity. To maybe watch a movie/show once in a blue moon? That's fine, but not every day.

This.

I found out they watched Lion King at her school and I asked calmly, when. It was during Aftercare so I didn't say much. But ONCE they let them watch a Disney movie during the school day because the teacher was working on compiling information for her masters and had the assistant helping her with it. I lost it. My daughter's class time is not YOUR homework time. It'd be one thing if she was out and about with her work and the assistant helping but if you're BOTH distracted .. w . t. f? teacher was spoken to and its the last time it happened. THIS is why I love that AJ is now vocal. Kids, they are the best narks in the world!

But yes, every friday they gather to watch a movie at 5pm and I'm ok with it. Doesn't bother me in the least.

But for the money *I* pay for school she better not be sitting in front of a TV!

However.......
In HS our Cal AP teacher was working on his next PhD (he had one already in Physics) So he would tell us "here's your assignment, I'm working on my paper, please try not to interrupt me" well ok. We were teenage kids told to keep quiet and work on Cal. No problem.

In grade school we watched TV.. things that were educational about migration of humpback whales and oceanography. Again kids watching TV but for educational purposes. No problem.

So its the circumstances and in this case, yes, it would bother me greatly.

I would be livid that my child is in a University lounge (accessible to strangers) as opposed to their dedicated daycare facility.

TV thing wouldn't bother me.

Cell phone wouldn't bother me either. I know I'm paying them to watch my baby but that doesn't meant they don't know how to multi task.
