Lucky me the washer just crapped out. Guess we won't be getting a TV. So, which is better- top loading or front loading? Where did you get it? What is a good brand?

Re: Washers

I have heard that front load is better. I have top load, left from the previous owner, so I do not know first hand. Front Load is supposed to use less water.

Re: Washers

Front load uses a lot less water - we couldn't believe it the first time we used ours, we thought something was wrong with it, but it works.
The front loaders are also supposed to be better at cleaning (honestly, I can't tell the differnce, but I like to believe it's working Chat Icon ) and they are supposed to be more gentle on clothes.
I like ours a lot - I think it is also pretty quiet comparitively.

Re: Washers

DH and I just bought the Kenmore HE4t frontload washer and the He4 dryer. They are awesome! I love them. I am embarassed at how expensive they were - but they do a fantastic job!

One thing with the frontloaders - you have to make sure that they are completely level when they are installed. If not, the machine will rock or "walk" during the spin cycle and do some serious damage ($$$) to the drum.

I definitely suggest you go to Epinions.com and read the customer reviews on the different models that are currently available.

WE have a front loader too and I love it! Definitely uses a lot less water and is so quiet you can hardly know its on. Plus with out the agitator in the middle, you get a bit more room.

a lot will say to use special HE soap in it, but you don't have to... If you use a regular soap like Tide that's not HE, just use half the amount you normally would. This prevents sudsing up all over the place.

I have the Whirlpool Duet HT in grey... bith washer and dryer. They were pricey but this is our second house and we are here to stay.

What I like about them:
storage pedestals- I would say this is a must, they are soooo low if you don't get the pedestals.

Normal cycles on both synch up (34 minutes each)- you don't get the dryer "back up" when doing multiple loads.

Uses less detergent and water and energy. Depending upon how much your water is, we know how expensive LIPA is... well, with a family they should pay for themselves.

Re: Washers

Like the others have said, front loaders use less water. Top loaders have agitators which aren't as gentle on your clothes as a front loader is.

We use our landlord's Maytag Neptune and lovelovelove it. We are most likely going to get the washer/dryer when we move into our home...however we are also considering an LG model.

Re: Washers

In addition to using less water, front loader are supposed to be easier on your clothes. The agitator puts wear and tear on your clothes.

We got an LG front loader with an electronic keypad. We didn't get the matching dyer bc the salesman said there really wasn't a difference from the traditional dyers. So for us it didn't really justify the extra cost.

Re: Washers

We have the Whirlpool Duet. WE LOVEEEEE our new washer. It spins the clothes so quickly and at such speed that they come out half the wetness of our old top loader--which in turn saves us money on the dryer. I recommend it. I just saw it on sale at PC Richards in last weeks paper.

Re: Washers

We have the LG front load washer. I LOVE it! It gets the clothes really clean, and also when you take the clothes out, they're just barely damp. This machine spins at a pretty high RPM in the spin cycle, which is good, but can also be bad if your floor isn't sturdy or isn't level (or the machine isn't installed level). The salesman at Best Buy said that a lot of people return this machine because of the banging that it can make from not being on a level, sturdy floor. We haven't had any problems though.

Re: Washers

I have a top loaderChat Icon and when ours craps out I want to get a front loader. They're better because you can wash bigger items in them like heavy jackets and comforters. In my top loader, I can't fit them in.

We got these too! They are pretty expensive, but we figured it was an item we should have a long time and worth the investment (although I've been told by family that was stupid and models for half the price will do just as well). It uses less water, less electric and I was getting less pilling on sweaters once we started using it. I don't use the HE detergent--I just use about half the regular amount. I know when I've put too much in cause the machine sensing the suds, stop till the dissipate and displays the error "SUD" so you know next time to put less in. The dryer is awesome too...takes about half the time the old dryer did.

ETA I love ebing able to wash our comforter and not have to go out to do it.

Re: Washers

A few months ago we bought a Fisher & Paykel top loader - it has all the qualities of a front loader (uses less water, less energy, less detergent, is easier on clothes, quieter, etc) but it was much less expensive. It looks different than other top-loaders. We love it! I think it might be on sale this week at PC Richard for about $450.

Re: Washers

We have the Kenmore Oasis HE...they come in front load and top load. We have the top load. We love it!! It's the largest capacity washer available and uses very little water. They also sell pedestals in case you want to make it higher & use it for storage. My sister has the front load and loves it, so it's just a matter of preference - but mine is slightly larger than hers. I love both the washer and the dryer...more pics on the Sears site.
