It's gross that's what it is. I really don't know...a root maybe?

The first time we got sushi, DH thought it was avocado and crammed a big wad of it into his mouth...omg he couldn't even SPEAK for like ten minutes. He kept rubbing his tongue with napkins.

The dog got a hold of a wad of it once too...omg...she pooping bombs for days!!

That stuff is like nuclear toxic!!

Re: WASABI ANYONE?????

Here I found this:

When most people think of wasabi, they think of the fiery-hot, greenish paste served with their sushi or sashimi. But they’re probably eating extra hot Western horseradish, mixed with some soy sauce, hot Chinese mustard and a little green food coloring. Real wasabi is notoriously difficult to find, and expensive when it is found.

Wasabi is sometimes called Japanese horseradish, and its taste is very similar. However, real wasabi — wasabia japonica — is a relative of the watercress family and an elusive little root. Like horseradish, it is a root, or rhizome, and it is grated or sliced for use in cooking. Wasabi is difficult to find because it is difficult to grow. It is expensive to buy because it is expensive to grow.

Wasabi is a fussy little plant, and has to be nurtured and brought carefully along like a delicate child. It takes about 18 months to reach its mature height of about 6 inches (36cm). Wasabi requires a constant stream of cool water, but not too cool; shade, but not too much shade; and a mild climate. Thus, the United States is not ideal wasabi-growing country, except in the Pacific-Northwest, where growers have had some success with the plant. It is also grown successfully in New Zealand, as well as in Japan.

Re: WASABI ANYONE?????

I hate wasabi sooooo much. It really bothers my nose even if there's just a small drop of it on my sushi. DH loves it and puts a ton of it in his soy sauce. Yuck.

Re: WASABI ANYONE?????

I don't "do" Sushi Chat Icon and I don't care for 'hot stuff' anyhow so I'd probably DIE if I tried Wasabi..

.. but DH eats sushi a lot and when he does, even the whiff of the wasabi makes me wanna hurl .. he LOVES it! Like someone else said, he stirs a big glop of it into his soy sauce and practically drowns the sushi in it Chat Icon

Sorry Sonia Chat Icon

Chat Icon Mine did the same thing. I couldn't get the words out fast enough to tell him to stop! Then I couldn't help but laugh. I felt horrible. It burns my nose, just to smell it.

Make that 1 more! They are addictive once you start eating them! My aunt had wasabi peanuts on the cocktail table at her super bowl party. VERY spicy, but YUMMY!!!
