Vomit question - baby 8 weeks old

#2 vomits once a week, not spit up - vomit... not to be too gross, but once it came out her nose as well as her mouth and just tonight I put her over my shoulder to burp her and she vomited again. It's not recurring as in several times in any given day, but is about once a week. Funny thing is that she actually does NOT spit up much, my first spit up all the time, but never vomited like this until she was 7 months old and had a stomach virus. But when #2 does - it's more than what I remember #1's spit up to be like. I mean - I had to change her and me - it was down my back and on the rocking chair and carpet. Not to be gross - but more to clarify.

So I was reading up on pyloric stenosis, I'm not sure it's that since it's not too often. She's definitely not dehydrated, but the vomit only occurs right after she finishes her bottle. I try to burp her a few times every time I feed, although usually the 9:30PM bottle is hard b/c she generally falls asleep on it so I tend to leave her longer w/o a burp. That may not be helping things.

On another note, doctor suggested a few weeks ago, the first time this happened, that I switch to a sensitive formula. Honestly I see no difference in the vomit - it's still once a week. The only difference I do see is when she was on Similac Advance - when she would pass gas it WREAKED! Like "clear the room" stink. Now even though she's still gassy from time to time, it hardly smells. I would like to get her back on the Advance as I have about 10 cases of the ready to feed stuff. Since using the Sensitive I've been using the powder - not sure if that makes a difference, but it is hard to measure as they titrate up in ounces. I only increase 1/2 ounces at a time so she's been on 4.5 ounces for about the last week or so which is a PITA to make when it's 1 (unpacked - which makes no sense to me since it may mean it's not consistent) scoop for every 2 ounces. Anyway, not sure that part matters but I read somewhere that sometimes the RTF is better if they are having issues. Not sure that's at all true.

Was thinking of calling the doctor again tomorrow, but I also need to call b/c my 16 month old may have a UTI - she has been crying and pointing to her diaper. When we check it, it's barley wet and she's not consitpated either. She's just not herself, but no fever. Not sure I can make 2 appointments for the same day. I think they both need to be looked at. #2 - the 8 week old has her 2 month well visit on Saturday and was thinking of waiting till then to discuss the vomit issue as long as it doesn't happen again before then.

Thoughts?

i EBF, but dd did this a few times before i took dairy out of my diet. it was projectile and more than i thought could fit in her little belly! apparently i did this too when i was a baby (my parents supplemented with formula and i couldn't tolerate milk-based so i had to be switched to soy).

maybe try switching to a soy-based formula? see if her ped thinks that could be the culprit.

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I hope your DCs feel better soon. I would call their ped and make appointments for both of them tomorrow. I know my ped says a sick visit is differently coded than a well visit, b/c once DS was sick the night before his monthly visit and I brought him in b/c we had already had the appointment scheduled but they told me I should have rescheduled to a sick visit instead.

Hey,

Is she having any other discomfort otherwise. Coughing, choking, gagging? I would go to the doc again. Possible it could be reflux too. If it is, they can give her baby zantac. They can also do tests for other GI issues too. Keep me posted.

Sounds like first signs of reflux. This is what DD went through. She did not have pyloric stenosis luckily. Work and talk with your pediatrician. DD had to go on a special formula (Alimentum) and is on Zantac because she was rejecting the bottle. Best of luck!
