Vinyl siding or Cedar shakes
Also what you like/dislike about it. I'm just so undecided which one. I'm worried about cedar getting moldy and fading and vinyl if they will hold up.

Re: Vinyl siding or Cedar shakes
Im buying a house that has Cedar shakes and while I llike the way it looks new, I dont like how it fades (I guess if not treated) Some shakes are missing and now Im going to have different colors up there?
I like the way the vinyl shakes look so when I redo it I will be going that route I think.

Re: Vinyl siding or Cedar shakes
I have cedar and hate it because of the way it changes color. A house down the road has cedar that doesn't change colors and it looks really nice (he told me the cedar he has is very expensive).

Re: Vinyl siding or Cedar shakes
You have to stain the cedar so there is upkeep (maintenance) to it. It can look beautiful it just takes work and $. I think the allure of the vinyl is less maintenance (not to mention it considerably costs less in most cases) IMO they are in two completely different ball fields as far as character of the house ect.

Re: Vinyl siding or Cedar shakes
We have vinyl shakes and we love them! Our house is dark gray and the siding was done at least 6 years ago and still looks like it did when it was first done. No fading or anything.

Aesthetically, cedar shakes all the way. Pre-stained if you want to keep maintenance to a minimum for a while.

love the look of cedar shakes but would go with vinyl shakes for functionality.
we have vinyl siding on the sides/back and vinyl shakes on the front.

Re: Vinyl siding or Cedar shakes
i have cedar that is painted. Its from 1952 with sections replaced when rotted. I WOULD NEVER BUY and i am all for natural look (never would be a PVC fence) but the carpenter bees, insects, etc! Go for vinyl and good quality that isn't cheap looking if your home is historic.

Re: Vinyl siding or Cedar shakes
We had cedar shingles that never faded after 15 years+. However, woodpeckers loved them.... There must have been something in the walls right outside our bedroom because that was their favorite spot to peck. I had to put sheet metal behind the spots to keep them from going back. The shingles were also very fragile. If you just brushed them with your fingers, you would dent the shingles. If anything banged into them, they would split and come apart.
We have vinyl shakes on the front now, and straight siding on the sides. Much less maintenance.

Vinyl siding or Cedar shakes
Many older homes (I'm thinking built in the 70's) around me have cedar shakes and I just can't stand the look. I'd really have to see pics of how this looks if done new because all I can picture are the old blah houses with them. I'm not a huge siding fan but I do much prefer it to the old shakes I'm picturing. We have siding.

We have real cedar shakes, love the look..natural. Love how each has a different shade. We treat every few(2-3) yrs and so far they look like new. Im not a fan of vinyl anything.

Re: Vinyl siding or Cedar shakes
Definetly NOT cedar shakes!! We have an extension on the back of our house with cedar shakes. We have carpenter bees and a bird's nest. The bees also have made various holes throughout the cedar. In a year or 2 we r replacing with vinyl siding. Cedar shakes are too much to maintain.

Re: Vinyl siding or Cedar shakes
We got rid of the out dated brown rotting cedar shakes and replaced with vinyl shakes on front of the house and vinyl siding on the rest of the house.
