Vaccinations
Have any of you discussed this yet? My DH is really concerned about the vaccinations. He feels the hepB is unecessary beforel eaving the hospital. We both disagree with the flu shot. What do you think about all these vaccines our kids are given now?

Re: Vaccinations
as you know i gave vaccinations to my girls..Because it was something i felt strongly about. I think it's a personal decision. Also i felt like i needed to protect my girls from the viruses that are out there..Knock on wood my girls were hardly ever sick. You never know where other kids travel to and what kind of viruses they pick up along the way.

Re: Vaccinations
I did give Andrew vaccines but on my schedule not the Dr's. I spread everything out. I will not be giving Andrew the flu shot and will fight with everything I have so he doesn't get it. I don't get one and I do not believe in the flu shot one bit!!
I will follow the same schedule that I did with Andrew with Baby #2.
I did give Andrew the Hep B shot after we left the hospital at his first ped visit.

Re: Vaccinations
I agree... it's a rather personal decision... IMO, the flu shot and hep b shot are not necessary at that young age.
The flu shot frequently is not current to the ever mutating virus, and it never had conveyed 100% immunity like hep shots, tetanus... so getting it only lowers risk sometimes, and does practically nothing other times.
hep b is transmitted either sexually, by blood/saliva, by wild animals (baboons for example) and by an infected person prepping your food. babies aren't sexually active, aren't eating at restaurants (or even eating solid food), aren't medical workers, and aren't about to work in a zoo.... so I personally find it confusing that they would immunize a newborn with hepB. Crouton WILL get the hepB shot... but after age 2.

I agree....I go by the cdc recommended vacination schedule. Especially, since there are alot of parents making the decision NOT to vaccinate or delay the vaccinations, that is all the more reason IMHO to make sure that my dd is vaccinated

I agree I am looking to use the extended schedule. PS: the only OTHER reason to give a newborn HepB is if the mother is a HepB carrier.
Otherwise, babies aren't exposed to the dangers of HepB.
I am going to check with the day care to see if any shots are Necessary for them and go from there, but otherwise I am delaying.

Re: Vaccinations
i do not have a problem with my getting vaccines on the "normal" schedule, but it's something i will discuss with the ped and see what they say before making my final decision.

I was hoping you would answer. That is how DH feel about Hep B.

Re: Vaccinations
Hep B yes. Flu shot unsure. All other vaccinations on time as per CDC recommendations.
I work in a psychiatric day treatment center. I can be and have been exposed to blood borne pathogens and communicable diseases due to the poor health of the students/clients we serve. When I took the job years ago, it was STRONGLY suggested to all staff members to get the Hep B vaccine and we even got reimbursed for the copayments of the visits in which we got them. So if there was such a need/urgency for ME to get vaccinated given what I could be exposed to, you can be damn sure that I will vaccinate my child who could be susceptible to anything I may carry or bring home to her.
If my husband, who is the size of a defensive lineman can't fight off the colds I bring home from my students because their parents won't keep them home from school (but that's another thread), then I can't expect a newborn infant to. I would NOT, however give a vaccination to a child who is sick at the time of the shot. A day or 2 would not make a difference.

Re: Vaccinations
Still undecided. I agree with the HepB and flu shots, I will most likely hold off on them. The others I will give, but probably try and spread them out if possible. I don't want to go in have DS get 6 shots at once so I will avoid that.

there is TONS of info online....you, as the parent, can decide when and what shots your child gets....I would STRONGLY recommend doing you own research. I have done research and I still go by the recommended schedule

There is a great book The Vaccine Book: Making the Right Decision for Your Child By Robert Sears that is very very helpful.
I would def do your own research and do what you feel comfortable with. You can tell your Dr when you want them. If they don't listen find one that will.

I think this is what we're going to do....I want to do the vaccines, but on my schedule not the dr's. I also need to research which ones are absolutely necessary and which ones I don't think are that important....

Re: Vaccinations
Regarding the Flu shot- I gave these shots to my girls because i know 3 cases where babies got the flu and were not vaccinated and were hospitalized.. I also think RSV shot is important. Just adding in my 2 cents

hi again I WOULD advise you to go through your immunization record and make sure you are current with hep a, b, tetanus, and all of the other biggies... and if not, get it.
for restaurant goers, all you need is one infected food preparer and you'll be on a liver transplant list I worked in a neuroimaging group that dealt with the public for a while... and similar to Leslie's situation, I had titers done on EVERYTHING.... I am soooo immunized against anything communicable. But if a kid is at home all of the time and in contact with a short list of adults, I feel fairly secure in delaying many of those shots. After all, many of us have received about 10 immunizations in our lives... and the current CDC schedule is something like 40!
I would probably give Crouton the big shots (ex. the ones we got as kids... MMR, polio, hep a&B) earlier if he were to be going into daycare... it's definitely something to discuss with your pediatrician...
also, one shot I would definitely get prior to the terrible 2's is tetanus.... you know how kids get into everything

I actually found out I am NOT immune to Rubiola(regular measles, not German Measles) through my IVF clinic. but you can not get that while PG so she just said to be careful and get it after I deliver. I am going to get the pertussis. I am all for tetanus. I do not trust paharmaceutical companies or politicians since everyone is out to make a buck for themselves. Call me a conspiracy theorist. My kids will probably not be in day care but will be in other public places. I think we will have to find a pediatrician we trust and reasearch and come to solutions we are both comfortable with. Thank you for sharing your knowledge

Getting the flu shot is not a guarantee that you won't get the flu. Many people that get the shot get the flu because there are soo many different strands of it.

I am not doing Hep B until age 3. I created my own modified vaccine schedule after doing some research. I am not giving the Rotovirus or flu shot at all and the rest are getting delayed or spread out.

I gave my baby the hep B in the hospital....I will NEVER do that again.
there is no need for it IMHO.
I was pressured into it(I was turning down bottles, not circumsizing, not keeping him in my room at night, I felt like I was already being "mom crazy" so I gave into this.)
