vacation w/nanny
Did anyone ever vacation w/their nanny? Any thoughts? We have 2 under 2 and I want to celebrate my 30th away...but I want to be with the kids. IT's never relaxing with 2 babies while on vacation, but I thought if we brought her it'll be really relaxing. We can spend the time with the kids but she can help out and stay in the rooms at night while they are asleep and all. I'd need to be paying her for the days we go away anyway, I figure this way I just pay for the flight and food/room (I wouldn't pay extra for the weekend- it's pretty much a vacation for her too and we'd be paying a lot for the hotel and room and all, plus the paid days that are weekdays). What do you think? I was thinking Bahamas-somewhere not too far. If you did, would you recommend it? I think the nanny would be very excited and up for it but i'd obviously ask her first. If you did, how did you do meal times? Did you eat meals together at restaurants? That's the only thing I'm not sure about. I may want some time of just us but it may be rude to tell her to eat alone! I understand dinner if kids are asleep but I figure lunches and bkfst would be together...? Thanks

You need to pay her for the weekend if you are expecting her to work. Its not going to be as relaxing for her, so while you are paying for her flight and room, you still need to pay her for the weekend.

Re: vacation w/nanny
It wasn't a nanny but in the past we have brought my mom on one vacation, friends brought their babysitter and we used her and this last trip my in-laws.
We mainly always used them at night and as a extra set of hands/eyes when we were down at the pool. We actually didn't even always use them every night. Some nights we all went out, other nights we put the kids to bed and then went out. My inlaws really enjoyed it.
I think it can be a vacation just as much as the nanny as it is for you.

My sister used to nanny alot and went away with two families. You need to pay them for everyday they are away with you. It's not their vacation, She did eat meals with the family, sometimes they'd give her money to do lunch on her own or an early dinner before the parents went out.

Why wouldn't you pay her for the weekends? It's not her vacation, it's yours and she is working for you, taking care of your kids, even if she doesn't work on the weekends per se, she is still working for you .
My sister was a nanny in Manhattan for a long time and she used to travel with families a lot, she always got paid no matter how long or what days, she worked for 2 families, one for 2 yrs and and the other one for 3 yrs . They used to get her her own room at a hotel and most days they had breakfast and lunch together, and dinners too if the employers didn't go out or something. They basically paid for everything .One of employers used to get my sister a spa treatment every vacation they went to so she could have little fun and feel special, they loved her . I know few girls who used to be or are nannies and they get paid for every day they are away, weekdays or weekends

It's not really a vacation for a nanny if 1. She still has work 2. She is there alone, with no friends, no one really that she knows 3. if she does have a free time, she still can't go out and eat or go somewhere, because it's not fun to b alone.

What are her normal work hours? Is she a live-in?
I think you need to pay not only for her weekend, but additional time at night if that is not part of your regular routine with her. If she usually only works 9-5 for you, and you expect her to babysit so you guys can do dinner at 7pm solo, for example, I think she needs to be compensated.

Re: vacation w/nanny
ok thank you - I guess maybe we'll just not take her. Don't think we'd want to spend that much extra. I thought we'd be paying for all the meals anyway and let her eat whatever she wanted but not sure how much extra she'd want from Sat-Sunday. She's live-out, 7-6, but whenever we go away she mentions that she wants to go away and hints that she wants to come. I thought she'd enjoy it. We're very hands on with the kids- she won't be a 24/7 babysitter for us- but I don't thnk i'd want ot pay for all meals, plus flight, plus another hotel room PLUS 2 days of additional work- or more for nights. Thank you for the responses!

You could always just offer what you are willing to do and see if it's something she is interested in. The worst she'll say is no right?

Re: vacation w/nanny
Why don't you offer her your deal and see what she says? Or another option is ask a hotel if they have babysitters, sometimes they do or they might be able to help you find someone .That is if you wouldn't mind hiring someone you don't really know.

If you do go to the bahamas you could save alot just by staying in the comfort suites next door that have the same amenities and offer the access to Atlantis while saving a bunch, my boss took his 4 girls and wife and save 2500 just in food alone by doing this. If it were meI would pay for her but maybe you can set a price that works for you both.
