vacation homes?

DH and I are looking (into the far far futureChat Icon ) into buying a small vacation home.

We looove to ski, so I would like the poconos or upstate ny, as i would like it to be within a 4 hour drive to LI.

Does anyone have any suggestions on where a good place to buy is? we would look to buy in about 5 years if everything works to my planChat Icon

or if anyone has a vacation home, what do they like/dislike about it??

TIA!

Re: vacation homes?

We have a townhouse in Windham with my in-laws. We love love love going up there all year round, but especially for skiing. Windham Mountain is small but its much more family-oriented than Hunter IMO. My only complaint is that while the townhouse is easy because there is very little maintenance as far as plowing, garbage removal, etc....it is still a townhouse (attached to two others) and when the complex is packed its not really a "getaway", know what I mean? We've been looking (but not seriously) for a more private location, somewhere wooded probably but still close to the mountain. If you have specific Qs feel free to FM.

Re: vacation homes?

my family has a small cottage near Sag Harbour in south hampton. It's awesome all year round and close enough to go for a night or weekend. It's very relaxing, lots of families. We would spend all summer there as kids. I would think buying now would be pricey, but the value will always go up out there.

Re: vacation homes?

We have a condo in Myrtle Beach. We use it 1-2 weeks a year and our parents use at least a week each.

DH has it set up with a service that rents it out during the year when we're not using it.

The nice benefit is that it's a place to go to get away. The thing I didn't like at first was that it needed some work so it felt like I was on a working vacation.

We have friends of the family who have a house up by Windham and love it up there. They go up there year round!

Re: vacation homes?

My girlfriend has a great house in White Haven PA...its right off of Rt 80 in the Western Poconos. She is less than 15 mins from Jack Frost/Big Boulder skiing areas and about 30 mins from Tannersville....FANTASTIC outlets!!

The house is in a gated community with a pool and a lake.

this is what I think we are looking for. I love the Tannersville outlets - and there is more skiing in that area as well (Camelback)

Thanks everyone for your responses! We were also thinking of going the townhouse route as well...

Re: vacation homes?

I was just reading about this in Money magazine! Chat Icon
There was an article saying that now may be a very good time to buy a vacation home, but beware b/c it can be harder to get a mortgage and you may have to put a lot more $$ down than you would for a regular home. I think this is always the case, but obviously even more so in this market (I know you said sometime in the next 5 years..just pointing this out)

Also, it mentioned buying in less traditional "vacation" places (ie, where you are already interested in looking, as opposed to on the beach in Florida somewhere) you may be able to find a great deal

We want to buy a vacation house somewhere right on the beach...someday.....sigh

My inlaws have a condo on Statton Mountain. A little farther than you wanted to look, but I love it up there.
