Vacation during the school year
Just looking for some honest opinions because I am conflicted!
My family (parents, siblings and their spouses) want to plan a family vacation for this year. Probably a cruise or all inclusive resort.
With all of our work schedules, its been hard nailing down a time, plus my sister is going through fertility treatments and particularly, my husband owns his own business so taking vacation is difficult for him. The only month he can really consider is sometime in the fall since it's typically a slower time in his field - BUT my son starts Kindergarten in September, so September and October are definitely out. Do you think pulling him out in November for a week would be detrimental? He is my first so I've never dealt with this before. Is it frowned upon to take them out of school? Would he fall too far behind although its only Kindergarten?
I am not sure if I should commit to this. Please share your honest options :)

It will be frowned upon by the school but in my experience my children's teachers have always been very understanding.
I think the opportunity to spend time with family is important and should be considered. Not sure if Sept. is an option but if you could plan week of Jewish holidays or Columbus Day you might be able to have him miss a few less days.

Vacation during the school year
Our school and teachers never frown upon missing school for a family vacation. I've never been given a hard time ever, by anyone in the district. Or in our previous district. It's kindergarten, he is not going to miss a lot.
If you do a search, you will find many heated debates on this very topic. I don't care what others do, and they shouldn't care what we do

Yes, the school will frown upon it like this:
But in general the teachers are fine with it, and esepcially in the younger grades I don't think it's a huge deal.
I personally only pulled her for one day for a vac (it fell between 2 days off, odd way the jewish holiday and Columbus day fell a year ago) but it's all up to what you feel comfortable with. Tons of people do it. It's a personal choice

Re: Vacation during the school year
We just went on a family trip this past November to Disney, my son is in K. We went down around Veteran's Day weekend for a long weekend. School was closed Friday so we left Thursday evening after school and he missed Monday & Tuesday so it wasn't that bad. However my BIL pulled my niece for the entire week (and she is in K too.)

Vacation during the school year
Growing up, we only went on family trips during the school year (or else we couldn't afford it) all the way from elementary through high school.
Neither me nor my siblings suffered and we're all contributing members of society now :)
I think family time is way more important than missing a few days of school.

Vacation during the school year
I took DD1 out this year for vacation from K. They didn't mind at all. We did all of her hw assignments and some of what she would have done in school. It didn't seem to impact her.

Having two kids in high school, I wouldn't bat an eye. In my opinion, you are safe up until about 6th grade, at which point they would miss too much in one week.

Vacation during the school year
I take my kids out almost every year for a week. We are able to travel with a family of 5 during off peak times for much cheaper. Flights during school breaks are very expensive. The school can frown upon it too bad.

Vacation during the school year
We've pulled our kids out every fall for a week (usually in conjunction with days off so they miss 3-4 days of school). It's technically frowned upon but, the teachers understand (and are jealous they can't take time off to go away during the school year).
DS 1's K teacher pulled her kids out of school for spring break because theirs wasn't at the same time as ours.

Re: Vacation during the school year
Have done it a few times. We ask the teachers for work for the week. So long. As it’s not excessive I think it’s fine

Re: Vacation during the school year
We pulled DS out every year from K to 3rd grade for 3 days, to combine with Thanksgiving and go away for a week. Teachers were understanding and they gave him the homework he needed. It is K, I don't see a problem with that or missing too much.

we are thinking we may do thanksgiving week as well - this way he only misses 3 days.

He will be fine and the school will just have to deal. Go and make memories!!! And yes I agree most teachers will tell you to go and enjoy.

Lol. That is my go to when talking about a thing...like the state, or the school district, or the church "frowning on" something. Because that is how I picture it!

Not all schools will frown upon it. I took my ds (kindergarten) out for a week in November to go to Disney and his teacher was very excited for him.

Re: Vacation during the school year
I gotta say, I was a teacher before I had my son and I’m not ashamed to admit that I secretly when the same child every year (I had him three years in a row) would miss a week of school usually shortly after a break. Granted, this was middle school, not kindergarten, but still. Both my parents were teachers so we always had the luxury of everyone being home for vacations while School was out. I just didn’t get it and felt the parents weren’t valuing education.
Then I became a mom. I get it. One or both parents work, vacations are an ass load more expensive when schools are out.... my perspective has shifted.
That said, even if the school in general doesn’t care, I think each individual teacher will view it differently. If it were ME, I’d wait till the spring to pull out for a vacation, especially since I’m kindergarten they’re getting adjusted to a new school... routines... establishing friendships... but even though that’s what I would do, I don’t think there’s a right or wrong. Just make a choice and enjoy your trip whenever it is.

Re: Vacation during the school year
It's not a big deal, especially in Kindergarten. I've pulled my daughter for a week or more in 1st and 3rd, she's in 4th now and I'll be pulling her in May for a cruise. In December we're doing Disney again and I'll be pulling the kids, 5th and Kindergarten.
In the grand scheme of their education, missing a few days won't break them.

Pretty much the exact same except I also stayed the entire week and my DS is in 1st. I also pulled my son out of school for a week in February. Nobody cared either time.

Re: Vacation during the school year
If you are doing November you could also do it around election day and Veteran's day. Our school usually plans a superintendents conference day as well as parent teacher conference days around those times as well. I don't think it's a big deal to miss a week in Kindergarten.

Vacation during the school year
I am a HS teacher and have toyed with the idea of taking 3 personal days and having my son miss school once he is school age. I think in elementary school it is not such a big deal. When students in HS miss a week, it can be very detrimental as that can be literally an entire unit of study and that can have a big impact on their quarterly average.
