US MOVING UPDATE! (long)

SO WE WERE TALKING TO our well my parents and they have an apartment in their home whichmy brother lives in right now but he can move into the emtpy bedroom from when i left, for a year, this way we would save a good $20,000 in staying with them giving them $800 or so a month. it is very small but we can rough it for a year, i mean we are in the main floor and their is a den down there for the baby to play in, but we will have a door with a lock so we won't bother them... I hate the idea of moving back in with my parents but next year at this time i will be looking to buy a house of our own, which makes it ok....... plus my mom watches the baby over the year when i work so that is awsome that she will be right upstairs...........

would you move in with your parents for a year to save money for a house?

Re: US MOVING UPDATE! (long)

Me personally? I would not be able to handle living with my parents again, even though we get along great.

But if you and your DH think you could you could try it. You aren't locked in for a full year, so if it doesn't work you can always move out.

Good luck with your decision!

Absolutely!! It is so hard to save anything these days with the rent and mortgages SO high. My husband said he would love to sell our house and move back to an apartment. We could live like King and Queens. If it would help you financially, why not? I know it's so hard to make that transformation, but if it's better for you than do it. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: US MOVING UPDATE! (long)

it is def going to be hard moving back in with them, but they don't bother us at all. it is a seperate apartment on the ground floor and the only reason they come down there is for the computer of washer and dryer. other then that they stay up stairs. pluse i have 3 brothers that live at homeChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon 2 of which are still in High School but they are never there anyway!!!

Thanks everyone!

Re: US MOVING UPDATE! (long)

We are actually thinking of moving into an apartment if we can sell the house just so we can pay off some of the credit card debt we got back after my DH lost his job last year. Financially it's a great thing to do but thinking about us in a 2 BR apartment with 2 kids and 2 huskies after living in a 3BR house with 1/2 an acre fenced in will SU@K. The kids would have to share a room wi.th each other and I don't know how that will work out. It will just be harder, but thinking about being able to buy a nicer house is really motivating me. This is of course if we can sell the house. We'll have to see.

So to me I don't think it's a bad idea if you and your DH can deal with it. For me, I couldn't move back in with my parents even in a seperate apt but that's just my relationship with them, but moving back into an apartment is definitely doable... I think? Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: US MOVING UPDATE! (long)

I would totally do it! And I AM doing it right now. In our case, our lease ended in June and we are looking to buy a house now. We put all of our belongings in storage and have yet to find a house we love, so we're still saving as we look while living with my parents. I'm actually really enjoying living with them because my husband works nights and I finally have someone to talk to while he's not here. We're actually taking our time looking for a house because the situation is working so well for the time being.
I think you're very smart to do it. It will be well worth the sacrifice in the end. Our down payment money has increased SO much already and we've only been here two months. The more money we can sock away, the better.Chat Icon

We lived with my in-laws for a year and because of that we were able to by our co-op...then our house. If it wasn't for all the saving we did during that year we wouldn't have had the co-op.

Sounds like a great alternative for your guys to stay with your parents. Plus, like you said...your mom is right there to help out. No one has to travel.

Re: US MOVING UPDATE! (long)

It sounds like a perfect solution. I'm sure there will be times that it's not easy, but I think it'll be worth it in the end if it allows you to get what you really want in the end.

Before I got pregnant we talked about moving in with my SMIL. But DH, me, DS and a dog are just too much b/c there was no apartment, we would be in a bedroom and DH has three little siblings as well. We would have done it for the same reasons, to save money.

Listen, what is the WORST case scenario? It suucks and you move out in 6 months, right?

Yes, I would.
I have an aunt and uncle who offered us an apt. in their house when we first got married. We wanted to be "Big Shots" and be out on our own so we rented in Fairhaven..Well, after 2 and 1/2 years their apt. became available again and we JUMPED on it. We totally kicked ourselves for wasting sooo much money in rent at Fairhaven.
We have our house now, but, it took a long time to get here.
We learned the hard way.

same here. At my age (36) I could never go back living with my parents. We get along great but first I would never want to put them in that position( thier child coming back home even though I am paying rent) believe it or not, they will be and hear your business, dont want that either. I dont want to jeopardize the relationship b/t my parents and or DH. Parents are parents and no matter how much they say they wont get involved, they always do.

Re: US MOVING UPDATE! (long)

I'd do it!! Save up $$ to get a house when you can, and enjoy seeing your family so much while you're there!
