Urine Sample for 2 year old
So our pediatrician wants us to collect a urine sample from my 2 year old DD as part of her annual check up. Now how do you get a urine sample from a non potty trained kid? Well apparently you stick this little bag onto their vagina and then cover their diaper with it and hope they pee into the bag. Sounds fun right?
Well not at all. We tried to put the little pee bag on my daughter without her noticing and of course that is impossible. She was hysterical crying to please take it off..So eventually I did--which mind you is like pulling a bandaid off her poor little lady bits and of course she peed 5 seconds later.
UGH! Is it really necessary? If only I had left it on a few minutes later, mom fail. Sigh.

Our ped put the bag on our DS in the office. By the end of the visit... They had the sample.
DD peed on command! She potty trained early though!

Re: Urine Sample for 2 year old
if you sit her on the bowl, will she pee? Dd sat on occasion on th bowl from about 1.5 years (trained at 2.5). Maybe you can just stick a cup under her and put her on the toilet seat.

Don't sweat it if you can't do it. We couldn't get it from DD either at that age. She lived. If it's just for a routine physical and not a suspected UTI or anything I wouldn't push it.

Don't worry about it if you can't get it - it's not the end of the world. I've never heard of having the parent put on the urine bag themselves at home -- usually done at the pediatricians office and by the end of the appointment they have the sample. Also, just FYI any urine collected from a bag sample can only be minimally processed in a lab -- its not considered a sterile sample because it touches the skin as it exits the vagina (which reminds me, the area should be cleaned with a betadine solution prior to adhering the bag). The only true sterile sample that a lab will process is one that is collected via catheter.

Re: Urine Sample for 2 year old
We had to get a urine sample when DD was that age and I was so happy I was working -because DH had to deal with it She wouldn't pee in the doc office, so DH had to put that baggy thing on DD at home, and then once she peed - he brought it back to the doc office. Good times.

Urine Sample for 2 year old
I haven't had to get a urine sample for a routine visit, but a couple of months ago our Ped thought DD had a UTI and they had to get a sample. They put the bag on in the office and told me I would have to wait around until she peed. Thank god she peed like 15 minutes later. I couldn't imagine having to put that bag at home though!

Urine Sample for 2 year old
Thank you so much to everyone who responded. I have a 6 week old at home as well and sitting down to respond is nearly impossible. LOL They had tried to do it in the office but of course bc I had no idea they would be doing the pee bag I had nothing for her to drink and of course it was the only moment in time she didnt pee at all.
If they really need it I will go back to the office and they can do it bc we tried the pee bag at home and I tried getting her to sit on the toilet and pee in the cup but she had no clue what I wanted her to do LOL (She literally just turned 2) She kept asking ME to sit on the toilet LOL
Yesterday we had to take her for the 2 year blood work and that was a disaster as well bc they couldnt find a vein. And I had an appointment with a pediatric lab person. She was basically tortured and they still didn't get the blood!! Now we have to go back in 2 weeks for that as well.
This is really not my week. Thank you again to all who responded!! =)

Re: Urine Sample for 2 year old
the bag never worked for me -- not at 6 weeks (she was super gassy and wanted a urine sample) and not for the 2 YO check up either. IT wasn't until shew as almost potty trained (at least in pull-ups and sitting on the potty) that I was able to get a sample. If its not urgent, don't sweat it.

Re: Urine Sample for 2 year old
I have never had success with urine collection from my children. It was never mentioned that I didn't bring in a sample.
