Urine sample as part of 1 year lab work
Is my ped the only one?! I went to the lab today for her blood work and they told me he also ordered a urine sample so they gave me a bag that literally sticks to DDs vagina that's supposed to collect the urine. The 1st bag leaked so I called the peds office to question the entire thing, and they had me bring DD in so they could stick a new bag on...well, surprise, that bag leaked too! This is absurd to me...
Anyone else experience this?!?

I can only imagine. We never had to do it at 1. Curious what others reply. They did test it for diabetes (glucose), etc, so I assume thats why yours wants it.

We had to do it for my son's 2 year lab work.. That was bad enough - I can't imagine at 1!

Urine sample as part of 1 year lab work
My ped didn't order a urine sample for DS. He just did a finger stick in his office- and that was it!

Never as part of lab work. DD did have to pee in a cup once, but she was already 4, and that was tough enough!

Urine sample as part of 1 year lab work
We had this at our 10 month appointment today. One of my boys had no problem. The other didn't go the whole time we were there, so they gave me a bag to put on at home before we come for their 1 year visit and hopefully he will go by the time we get there.

DS had bloodwork only at his one year, no urine. I never heard of that. But each dr. has different rules so who knows. poor baby.

We had to do this at DD's 9 month appointment. Her bladder didn't cooperate by the end of the appointment, and they haven't followed up with us yet. I guess we'll try again when we go back for her shots at 10m.

Re: Urine sample as part of 1 year lab work
The only time I had to do something like this was when my DD was in the ER and we didn't know what was wrong with her. It was part of a series of tests to rule illnesses out. She ended up having rotovirus. It was the bag that you were referring to and that was terrible.
Anyway, as a normal course, for a healthy 1-year-old I would decline. I'd do the blood but refuse the urine until she is old enough to pee in a cup.

Re: Urine sample as part of 1 year lab work
they have done urine samples before for dd. they maybe giving u a bag that is for an older kid. the one they gave when dd was younger attached almost all sides so it really couldnt leak. this time they gave one with a sponge and it leaked but i just used whatever was in the sponge and put it in the little cup they supplied me. they really dont need all that much urine to check it.

Re: Urine sample as part of 1 year lab work
I noticed it was on the script for our 1 year blood work- but since i refused the 1 year bloodwork I never got that done either.
But, when DD had a fever virus a few months back, they gave us that sticky bag thing to get a sample to check for a UTI since they weren't sure what was causing her fever.
The first time it leaked and we couldn't get enough urine. The second time we got enough. It was awful though- because pulling it off was like ripping off a wax strip or something- her skin stuck to it and she cried so bad.
I will only do it if she is sick now- not for a routine test. It's not worth it to me.

Re: Urine sample as part of 1 year lab work
Thank you for all the responses. I'm giving it a last try today, and if it doesnt work, I'm going to decline. I took her for the bloodwork, which was torture enough. If I thought she was sick it'd be different, but why am I torturing my healthy 1 year old to get a urine sample?!?
