Urgent - Baby not gaining weight
Hey girls, I am wondering if anyone can help here. A good friend of mine has a baby with a very serious issue. He cannot and does not keep any foods down - he literally throws up all day long. No not just spit up, full throw-up and has not been gaining weight at all. This has been going on since he was a few weeks old. He is now 18 weeks old and only 11 pounds.
She has tried everything, breast milk, soy based, I think every type of forumla under the sun, including some very expensive ones. She started feeding him solids early on as per the doctor but still that doesnt work. She has been to 3 gastros and 3 endos, had an endoscopy, had genetic testing done, and has gone to a slew of other doctors. She literally goes to the doctor 4days a week with him and and no answers. It is obviously very upsetting and scary.
Pyloric stenosis and all other stenosis have been ruled out. She recently went to Montefiore Childrens hospital because she has heard good things and they are testing for Cystic fibrosis and running many other test. So far his platelets are high, potassium high and gluecose dangerously low. She goes back in two weeks for the results of the test and he will be having more tests run.
Has anyone on here experienced this or know someone who has? I would appreciate any feedback or will even take down a name/email if you know anyone who went through this.

Oooh Jenna this sounds very scary! I don't know what the medical situation would be, but obviously she's getting medical attention so *hopefully* they're going to diagnose him soon!!
And I could be way off here, but it seems TOO early for solid food, at just over 4 months??????
I don't know if we have any doctors on here, but I think we have a few moms whose DHs are MDs??
I pray your friend gets a dx soon and they can help the baby!!

Aww thanks! I may have something wrong there, maybe he is not doing solid food, but soft food? Sorry I am not familiar with terminology but they started him on cereal and baby foods very early, like 3 or 3.5 months old to help him to gain weight. He was losing weight every time he went to the dr. but finally they got him to gain a bit this last month or so. But he still throws up all the time so it is constantly a challenge. I do hope she gets answers though. I was just hoping maybe someone on here had a similar story or situation and/or an explanation or doctor?

oh this sounds terrible ...i dont have any advice either, im sorry but I hope the drs diagnose soon and the little guy starts to gain some weight

This is what I was thinking but one of the gastros she's seen HAS to have tested for this by now, no? Jenna I hope she gets it figured out soon!

has she tried getting breast milk donations or trying to re-induce lactation and try breast milk?

Thanks for your responses and concern girls. They took him off breast milk when he was 1 month old because they thought it was a milk or dairy allergy. I guess they have gone through every type of formula, etc, by trial and error and nothing works.
I think they tested celiacs too and that is out. I am not sure it would be that anyway bc like I said he has had this problem since he was very very small and was only on milk or formula only. It just the oddest thing, I hope she gets answers soon. Her next appt. at the childrens hospital is in 2 weeks.
ETA - I just asked her about the celiacs test, he is too young to check for that but it does run in her hubby's family. Interesting.
Also she said he was allergic to her breastmilk and had blood in his stool. Now he is on elecare formula. He was on alimentium but that didnt work.
