Upset. My cat is missing.
My 10 year old house cat who has never been outside or even went near the door bolted out the door around 2am on Mon morning while I was letting the dog out. He has never in his life gone near the door so I don't know what happened. My 4 year old realized today that he is missing and keeps asking everyone we see if they have seen her cat. I asked my neighbors to keep an eye out and the shelter said to ask the mail person if they have seen him. I drove around and nothing. I was expecting to find a ran over cat since people drive like maniacs over here.
Dh is going to go around again tonight when he gets home. People keep telling dd that he went to play with his friends and she just replies he doesn't like other cats, only his brother and sister, who are my other two cats.
Any tips? I can't leave food out because we have several feral cats that live in the area and tons of squirrels and raccoons.

Upset. My cat is missing.
Put pictures on all the missing pet Facebook pages (like Missing Angels of LI), make sure to leave a blanket or something on your porch or close to your door. If it's nice out and you are home, you can even leave your door propped open and he may just come in.
Cats are really good at hiding. My guess is he's not far and just very scared to come out.

Upset. My cat is missing.
I've read of people putting the used litterbox outside for the scent.
I hope kitty returns soon!

Re: Upset. My cat is missing.
Try leaving catnip and his litter outside. Does he respond to toys?
I pray that you find him soon.

Re: Upset. My cat is missing.
I went through this last year. I'm so sorry you are agoing through this; I know how you feel.
Have you taken a look in your basement? The cat is probably hiding. Ask your neighbors to check their houses, too-- sheds, basements, under decks, etc.
FB groups are helpful and put up lots of flyers. Can you put them in mailboxes?

Yes, he's definitely not in our basement. I've been talking to my neighbors as I see them. I will make flyers tomorrow. And put them in mailboxes. I was hoping with the rain that he'd be on my porch looking to come inside but no. I haven't even seen the other ferals that hang around my block. This sucks.
Good idea about litter box and no he is not into toys.

Upset. My cat is missing.
Put his litter box outside (dirty litter and all!), if you have a dry area like a covered deck area put some of your own clothing out there. Familiar scents is what's most important. If he has never been outside chances are he's hiding very close by. Check literally every inch of your property. Hoping he returns home soon!

Dh keeps checking under our decks and our shed. No. I was going to clean the boxes tomorrow but instead I'll put one out back where we saw him last.

I get it. I have 4 cats and would be absolutely losing my mind if one of them went missing. Are you in your town's fb mom group? I occasionally see people post missing pets in mine. If your vet practice has a fb page you could also ask them to share on there as well. My vet sometimes posts pics of missing pets/patients.,

Re: Upset. My cat is missing.
I am so sorry! I agree with the suggestions of PPs. Maybe an off the wall idea but perhaps walk the dog around the block a few times a day in hopes that the cat can detect the scent?
Stay positive and please keep us updated.

Upset. My cat is missing.
I pitbthe litter box out and have talked of the neighbors. Nothing. Vet and pound said most cats return after 7 days so it's a waiting game.

Re: Upset. My cat is missing.
1. Did you actually see the cat run out?
2. Put the litterbox outside...dirty smelly is best
3. Put food outside. I know you said there are ferals and other critters but it is a good way to attract your kitty who is probably hungry
4. Many housecats who get lost become scared and go into survival mode. My big fat cat who is a mush ran and actually hissed at me when I tried to grab him outside. Once I got him back in the house he was perfectly fine. So it is not as easy has spotting them and scooping them up.
5. If you have a night vision camera set it up and see if kitty is actually coming to visit. Miso visited several times in the middle of the night and usually at the same times.
6. Set up a trap with the smelliest food (salmon, mackerel, sardines, etc.). You may catch every feral in the neighborhood (and a racoon or two) but eventually you should get lucky.
7. Lastly, you can leave your door open, with a bowl of smelly food inside and he may just walk himself right in. Most ferals will not come in your house. This is how I got Miso back (I have low windows in the front of my house by the deck and I took the screen out and put the food inside).
House cats will typically not wander more than a four house radius. Good luck <3

Upset. My cat is missing.
He came to the front door yesterday but when I opened it he took off into the backyard. I'm keeping the door open with food that he can see. I don't know what has gotten into the cat.

I hope you find him soon. I have no suggestions because I'm new in the cat world, but I understand because I would be devastated if my kitty goes missing

I agree, great sign. I am sure he is scared and skittish but he knows he is home and will come inside soon.
