Upset and Freaking Out
I'm so upset right now....
I had my AFP/Quad screen Monday morning. My doctor said we would talk about the results at my 18 week appointment. Instead, I just got off the phone with her.
I'm an older mom to be.. so initially, my downs ratio was 1:157 prior to any testing. My ultrascreen came back with results 1:857 which are very good for my age. My PAPP-A came back on the low side but she wasn't too concerned with that. At my 14 week appoitnment my DH and I talked about our concerns with my Dr. re: the AFP/Quad screen especially about the false positive rate. We went through he!! to get pregnant - 2 years, many fertility treatments, miscarriage, etc... I know there tends to be a high percentage of false positives for IVF women. Anyway, my Dr. just called me and my downs ratio went from 1:857 to 1:191. For various reasons I'm not going to discuss, we do not want to do an Amino. My Dr. suggested moving my Level II up to week 18 instead of 20, and also move my appointment up with the genetic counselor as well. Depending on the Level II findings, we'll then make the decision whether or not to do the Amnio. I'm freaking out and very upset right now. I'll love this child no matter what, but after all we went through to get pregnant, I just wanted a normal and as worry free a pregnancy as possible.

I'm really sorry for what you are going through. I know it's hard but try and stay positive for now until you have a reason not to. See what the genetic counselor has to say and see what turns up at the Level II before you get yourself too upset. Chances are everything will be okay. I know someone who got "iffy" results back and ended up having to see the genetic counselor as well. She's due in a few days but so far throughout the pregnancy the baby has been fine and has been developing normally. I will keep my fingers crossed for you..........keep us posted!!

Re: Upset and Freaking Out
Did they doc have anything to say about the false positive rate and the AFP? Anything else they can do besides the amnio to be more conclusive?
I am sorry-- this kind of stress sucks.... but, try to take some comfort int he fact that this test is just not reliable.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. I know it's an elevated number, but 1:191 is still such a low percentage. I hope everything turns out ok.

Re: Upset and Freaking Out
ugh...this whole thing is such a roller coaster. Not just with you but so many of us on here.
From my opinion, it seems like when dealing with RE's and fertility specialists, there is so much care and screening....its almost too much. And the anxiety lasts throughout the pregnancy.
I know this is hard but you just need to be positive and look at how many people on here have had that happen to go on and have healthy babies. And, as you said, there are so many false positives! So many! These doctors give so much information....and of course, we analyze everything....I do the same thing. Just hang on and try to think positive...I know that's easier said than done but you just have to.

Thanks everyone. My husband keeps telling me there's nothing to worry about, but I can't help it. I will worry about this child for the rest of my life.
Randi - She really didn't have much to say about the false positive rate, but did agree that it happens and shared her experience with me. She told me when she had her last child, her AFP/Quad screen came back 1:13 and her child is fine.
I'm just a worry wart...
Thanks again everyone!

Re: Upset and Freaking Out
I'm sorry your feeling freaked out. Why not just skip the genetic counseling if you feel it wouldn't matter to you either way. Hope you can be at ease soon.

I am sorry you don't need this additional stress.
Remember there are lots of false positives, it is only a screening.

Michelle-
I can undestand loving your child no matter what. That is how DH and I felt when considering test results. Please try to enjoy these next few weeks. I know it's hard but your love for this child is so strong so let it carry you.

Re: Upset and Freaking Out
I don't blame you for being upset. I do know that it is VERY common for IVF pgs to have abnormal results on these tests. I will that all goes well with the genetic counselor and the level 2. We are here for you.

Re: Upset and Freaking Out
I personally don't have any experience with the genetic testing, false positives, ratios, etc.
And it's always easier said than done, don't stress yourself. It's not good for you or the baby. Take a few deep breaths and try to relax.

Re: Upset and Freaking Out
Our genetic counselor told us that 95% of the positives are false positive. Yes thats right, only 5% of the positives turn out to be a real issue. Just try and think positively and know that statistics is on your side

Re: Upset and Freaking Out
I'm sure everything will be fine but its only natural to worry about your baby. Try to remain positive, 1:191 is less than 1%. I hope you find out that all is well soon so that you can enjoy this time instead of worrying yourself sick.

that is just insane!! it makes me seriously doubt why this test is automatically given to every pregnant woman (i know it's optional, but i know that most women don't question it - i certainly didn't).

I know, and this was my concern when I spoke to the dr at my 14 week appointment. I was afraid of just this happening. I'm a nervous nelly to begin with. What freaked me out the most yesterday was her calling me. At my last appointment, she said we would talk about the results at my 18 week appointment and the fact that she actually called me yesterday (when my next appointment is on 9/12).
I know the odds really are in my favor, my DH (who is an actuary and lives for numbers) keeps reminding me of this. I just moved all my appointments up. My Level II is now on 9/9, my OB is the same day and we'll take it from there.
Thanks everyone for your hugs, prayers and support.
