Update:IRMA-St Maarten

With the destruction caused by Irma in St Maarten, would you keep your vacations plan in place for March. I didn't even think about it until my husband asked me yesterday if we should cancel.

So sad to see so many Islands being destroyed. It's breaking my heart.

Update:

Since I booked the whole vacation with Delta, they did call me and told me the hotel will not open for 2018. They can relocate me but they are not even sure what hotel will be ready by then. So they cancelled my reservations and refunded me the entire amount. I'm sad because I was so excited about going and was holding on to some hope but am happy that Delta will refund me the entire amount paid including flights.

Re: IRMA-St Maarten

I heard on the news this morning that a lot of the resorts have cancelled reservations for the rest of the year.
March is far out but who knows. At this point, just leave it. Cancelling now really wouldn't matter. You'll know closer to the trip what the condition of the resort and island is at that point.

I'm due to stop there as a cruise port in 25 days. I'm going to assume at this point it will not be function and itinerary will change. This will be the second time in two years that my itinerary will change due to hurricane.

But people are without homes, water, power.. etc. I wouldn't dare complain about the change. I'm on a fancy boat and they are struggling to rebuild. Which I hope they do quickly considering how much they relay on tourism.
My heart just breaks for these people.

One of the islands (I think it was Dominica) we went to on a cruise was hit by a hurricane about six months before we went and there were still signs of hurricane. We went on a half day excursion and it was a port intensive cruise with five ports on a seven day cruise so it didn't ruin our vacation. But it was sad to see the signs of hurricane and the poverty. Wealthy islands may be able to rebuild sooner than others but it will take long time for some islands.

Id cancel... the islands tend to be veryyy slow at building, let alone rebuilding... lack of funds and just plain and simple being "island slow". So sad to see what has happened there... especially that video of the airport... been there so many times to watch the planes.

I would cancel. Even if they managed to get things up and running you'll have six months of uncertainty and I'm sure you'll probably want to plan something else.

I probably wouldn't cancel yet. The island depends on tourism, so I'm sure they will use every resource to get things back up and running. Also, the USVI are a US territory, so will be getting help from the US.

Re: IRMA-St Maarten

The resort may be fine, it is in their best financial interest to rebuild quickly.
It's the rest of the island that I would be concerned about.

My island, St. John, was hit very hard too and most everything is gone. Two restaurants are somewhat functioning and feeding people as best they can. Same with Jost Van Dyke in the BVIs. Most everything is gone.

I wonder if Delta will honor the same. I called Saturday and they said I would be penalized $190 per flight ticket.

I live in NY, but have many friends in the US / BVI that we visit every year. Everyone is finally accounted for, the last one this morning !
80% of St. John's buildings were damaged to some extent, if not completely destroyed.
St. Thomas and Tortola have similar damage, but not as bad.
Food and water are in very short supply.
Good news is that aid is finally trickling in.
It's just going to take a long while to rebuild, but that they will.

I am glad that you were able to reach your friends and family, that must be such an enormous relief! I hope they are able to rebuild the islands better than before. As with Sandy, we know it will be a long road to recovery.

This is so sad. We just came from St. Thomas and I left a piece of my heart there. I was hoping to visit St. Martin soon. So heartbreaking.

Re: Update:IRMA-St Maarten

I'm glad you were given the option to change. However, I am overall so sad Chat Icon. I made a cruise port at St. Maarten I 2015 & loved it. I booked a cruise for March 2018 for another call literally days before the storm hit. I'm sad to know we likely won't be able to visit by that time & I am further heartbroken for the wonderful locals that we are projecting won't have their basic needs in order 6 months from now Chat Icon Chat Icon
