UPDATED with ring specs...How much $$ for an engagment ring??
The time has come for me to sell my engagment ring. Does anyone know what the resale % you get is. So if my ex paid 20,000 for my ring...approx what can I expect?

Cut: Round
Clarity:" VVS1
Color:F
Carat size: 2.1
It is in a platinum setting with two baggets on the sides. I have the GI certificate...
Thanks for the info...I really want to sell it...or just keep in a box for the rest of it's life...

I know that the value of a diamond INCREASES with age. Take it to get appraised... they'll be more accurate than any of us can be.

Where are you planning on selling it? Does it have the certificates?
I know on ebay they seem to go for 1/4- at most 1/2 of what they are appraised...But maybe a jeweler would give more?

A lot of times the resale value isn't worth it unless maybe a private party is interested. I made mine into a necklace. Good Luck! Congrats again on your new man and move to Atlanta!!
A lot of jewelers try to low ball the true value.

A lot depends on the 4 C's...
and the setting too, of course!
You'd probably make out better selling it to a person rather than a jeweler, but depending on your asking price, you might have a hard time finding someone to buy it.

It would cost more than $20k to buy that from a jeweler. With those specs, I'm thinking a jeweler would sell it to a customer for around $23k.
That being said, you should be able to get AT LEAST $15k from a jeweler!!!
Probably a little more from a private buyer.

If you go on bluenile.com you can search for loose diamonds, based on the description of your ring, a similar diamond would sell for like 35K to $40K

Platinum has SKYROCKETED in price. She might be able to sell the diamond and the setting separately.

You will definitely get more going privately than to a jeweler.

Did you get an appraisal certificate when you bought it? If so, then you can NOT get any less for the diamond as long as you have that certificate.

Thank you all for your input. I do have a recommendation to a jeweler in the diamond district...and will be getting an appt. with him. I will shop around and see...
Ex-hus...was a complete A-hole...but did a good job picking out a diamond...or more like his mother did!

my Mom sold her 2.5 carat heart shaped diamond e-ring in a plat setting from her second husband to Rose Jewelers in Patchogue(or maybe it was Sayville). Either way she sold it for a really good number IMO.

I do have the certificate...i think actually...but those #'s are so jacked up...are you sure about that?

I know that when I got mine, the jeweler told me that if I ever decide to sell it, make sure I have that certificate and I can't get any LESS than that. So if the value went up, you should definately get more.
I know of a great guy in the diamond district if you want his information.
