Updated w/ response from Park! Really need your support to help petition for a dog park...oppositioners are "afraid" of dogs in the park????

Yesterday I got a flyer asking for help to petition for a dog park at Eisenhower Park in Nassau County. We really could use more dog friendly places in Nassau County, so even if you don't live in Nassau, will you please help? I figured you ladies, Suffolk or Nassau, might be willing to help just to support the rights of us dog owners.

Below is the info from the flyer I got. It said:

"Please call Jose Lopez, Parks Commissioner at 516-572-0272 or email at [email protected]

A petition of 1300 names was sent to him and it wasn't enough. Mr. Lopez says that there are people who oppose the dog park b/c they are "scared" of dogs in the park and they don't want their taxes to pay for a dog park!

Please tell him dog owners are tax payers too, and we want a dog park. Ask him why it's ok that our tax dollars get spent on golf courses, ball fields, tennis courts, swimming pools that us dog owners may or may not use, yet a few dollars can't be spent to construct a dog park?! Please be polite but firm.

The people who don't want it are being heard, so us dog lovers/owners should too!"

What gets me is....
People are "scared" of dogs in the park? That sounds a bit ridiculous to me, esp if they are just allowed to go to an enclosed dog park area. Just not fair, when we pay taxes too.

Last year I drove to Eisenhower park with my pup, it was a nice day and we were bored. It broke my heart that I could not even get out to walk him as there are no dogs allowed in the park. Nassau County doesn't have many dog friendly parks, compared to Suffolk, so we really could use your help!

See bottom for update!

Same here.

In addition to having no children, I don't golf. I don't use the public pools. I don't use the ballfields. I don't use the tennis courts. So what about us? Can't I have something for my tax dollars in addition?

I have just written Parks Commissioner Lopez on your behalf from Suffolk County Unleashed.
If you sincerely want to get a park going at the park (is this a STATE park or a COUNTY park? I'm thinking Eisenhower is a state park) you can tell whoever is organizing this petition to get in touch with me-
my phone and email are posted on the site-

Thank you.

I think the organization that handed out the flyer was from LI-dog.org.

They were at Old Westbury Gardens Dog Days handing out flyers. There is no contact person listed on the flyer so I believe it was a rep from LI-dog.org.

I actually think it's a county park. There are signs all over saying "no dogs allowed".

http://www.lidog.org/

I believe they are the ones working on the issue, and think they handed me the flyer. They begged me to call and write, so I figured I would ask all of you to do the same.

Done, and I send a separate letter as well.

I think that it is ridiculous. And if he did his research, there are more homes in Nassau with licensed dog than without. He needs to get his demographics right.

Its a crock. They do not want to worry about waste removal or the unlikely event that someone gets hurt.Chat Icon

I totally agree. Like I said above, if "tax payers" don't want a dog park, what about us tax payers that don't want tennis courts, pools, ball fields, etc? Why don't we have a say?

It is a crock, I totally think you hit the nail on the head with your suspicions.

Re: Updated w/ response from Park! Really need your support to help petition for a dog park...oppositioners are "afraid" of dogs in the park????

Please keep emailing and writing if you have not done so, please help!

I just got an automated response, with many others on that list and some of them are LIF posters. Here is the response:

Hi All,

Many thanks for your recent email requesting a dog run in Eisenhower Park. Yours was one of many messages sent to my office with regard to this matter.

It gives me great pleasure to report to you and all of your fellow dog owners that we are currently in the process of planning a dog run in Eisenhower Park. As I am sure you can appreciate, this project must take into consideration many factors, including proximity to park roads and other high traffic areas. We must place the dog run in an area that may be enjoyed by residents and their pets while also considering the needs of other park users.

We are currently canvassing possible locations within the park and investigating capitol project possibilities to expedite this project. We are happy to provide this enhanced service to Nassau County residents and hope you will use it frequently in the future. In the meantime, please feel free to utilize one of our other dog runs, located in Christopher Morley Park in Roslyn, Wantagh Park, Cedar Creek Park in Seaford, Nickerson Beach Park at Lido Beach and Bay Park in East Rockaway.

As you might know, several of the dog runs operated by Nassau County Parks have been in existence for more than a decade and have provided freedom, socialization and exercise for our canine population. Key to the success of a popular dog run, however, is the human population, the dog owners. Several of our facilities’ dog runs are fortunate to have an organized and productive dog owners group, who advocate for their animals and bring fraternity to the location. Should you wish to become part of such a group for our planned dog run in Eisenhower, I would be happy to hear from you.

Again, thank you for writing. We will keep you informed of our progress.

I think I saw your email on there, similar to your LIF name.

I am going to email them from my DH, and from my maiden name too maybe.

I can understand - many people decide to walk their dog without leashes and I'm sure people fear this. I am a dog owner and lover but I have always been fearful of other people's dogs, especially when not on a leash. Everyone often forgets that these are domesticed, but still wild animals, as much as we train and love them they still have natural instincts that take over.... I personally love Eisen. for enjoying time with my DH playing catch, walking etc. I would hate to be watching where I walk for poop! JMO

I am sure its a gated area for the dogs to run and play. If you mean walking through the park to get to the area. I agree people have to pick up the poop if they happen to poop outside the run. Even inside the run they have a rake and pail and everyone cleans up after there dog. This just happened to me yesterday. I was leaving the park and my Lola did poops. I went to my car and got a paper bag and went back to pick it up... I would never just leave it. But I can see people doing that. They do it everywhere... I see poops all the time walking my dog... So people are inconsiderate. It would be a shame if that stops this doggy park from happening,

If it actually happens, I would be so excited. There are no dog parks close to me.
