UPDATED - LO has fever for 4 days straight - HELP
This is for my sister, she is freaking out. My nephew has had a fever since Friday and she does not know what to do anymore. She took him to the doctor and he tested negative for the flu and strep. His fever has been up and down after Tylenol and Motrin. She is heading back to pedi now for a urin bag to see if he has a UTI. Anyone have any experience with this, ot words of wisdom to help me calm her down.
ETA: Thanks for all the responses. I guess I should have said that he is 15 months and his fever ranged from 101 to 103.7 My sister is a worrier so she took him back to the doctor and they sent him for a chest X-ray - the poor thing has pneumonia. Needless to say my sister is a wreck, but the little guy is acting normal again. He is a trooper.

LO has fever for 4 days straight - HELP
I don't mean to belittle the question, but I don't think four days is that crazy unless we are talking about a newborn. I can think of a few times my kids had fevers that long.

My son is 17 months and recently had his first fever for five days ranging from 100 to 103 to no fever at all. Ped was not concerned and told me it was normal so tell your sister not to worry!!

How high is the fever? Sometimes a fever is not worth treating as its the body's way of burning off whatever is cooking.
However...
One of my close friends has the same thing going on with her DD, with the fever spiking as high as 105.3! After 2 visits to the ER they ended up testing her blood and found that she had high white blood count which is the sign of a bacterial infection.
So with out trying to freak her out she should definitely follow up with her ped. Good luck!

Re: LO has fever for 4 days straight - HELP
DS is 3 and recently had a fever for 5 days straight. His fever on day 4 was higher than on day 2 - went down to 100.9 only to then go back up to 103. It was a virus. There was nothing the ped could do. He had no other symptoms days 1-4. By the end of day 4 he started to get a runny/stuffy nose and the "cold" part really came out.
ETA: Took him to the ped twice, for nothing bc there was nothing they could/would give him.

nasty viruses will cause fevers for that long..as long as they're are no other bad signs (dehydration, lethargy, etc..) it prob needs to run its course.

Re: LO has fever for 4 days straight - HELP
I wouldn't panic. On a few occasions one of my DC has had fevers that ran high, for a LONG time. The first time it was Roseola, the 2nd time it was Scarlet Fever.
Both times, DC was fine other than the fever and it did just go away.
Tell her, if the fever breaks and her DC breaks out into an all over rash, DO NOT PANIC, it almost always happens after a long fever virus. Definitely call the ped, but it is 99% nothing to worry about it and it means the worst of it is over.

I agree! DS had 104 degree fever for 4 days at 15 mo. The doctor told me to wait it out and keep him hydrated, and sure enough he got a rash on day 5. It was roseola. Hope he feels better!

DS has a fever virus right now. He gets them a few times a year. No other symptoms really. Just needs to run its course.

Re: LO has fever for 4 days straight - HELP
4 days is pretty standard. My ped says average virus runs fevers from 3-6 days some even longer. What other symptoms does he have? It can't hurt to go back to the ped if she is concerned.

Re: UPDATED - LO has fever for 4 days straight - HELP
I updatedtmy original post. Plus I have a question. Is it possible to diagnose pneumonia by listening to the chest/lungs?
Thanks.

Wow, how scary!
I think you need a chest xray to diagnose it, but I am not positive.

UPDATED - LO has fever for 4 days straight - HELP
DD has had walking pneumonia diagnosed 2x by listening first. Sometimes though it might be easier for them to hear then others.
Glad things got figured out. Once he is on antibiotics and prednizone he should bounce back quickly. I know my DD did. It might be hard but having him rest as much as possible is best.
