UPDATE 12/3: Macy's Herald Square Santa/Santa-Land

Has anyone been this year since they implemented the new reservation only system? We snagged a time slot for this weekend (what seems like an impossible feat!) and I'm super curious if this will help. They have a disclaimer on the website that on their busiest days, waits can still approach/exceed 1 hour even with the reservations. Ugh!

Update: So the consensus from those that replied seemed pretty dim and I was dreading that part of our trip. I felt that I had to update you all -- everything went so smooth! We had a reservation time slot of 4 to 4:30. We got on the line at 4:15, walked through the Santaland, had our family picture taken, saw Santa, and had our pictures printed in hand by 4:42. Less than 30 minutes from start to finish! I'm not sure if when they opened up last weekend they were still working out the glitches of the new reservation system, but whatever they did, it worked (and this was going on a Saturday!) Every one was happy and helpful, line was moving all the time, and everything organized!

Let me know how it goes. We are going on the LIRR Holiday Express and plan to visit Santaland after. A week before Christmas...and I'm sure it will be super busy! Not interested if we have to wait an hour though! Last year we did a reservation and waited 5 minutes.

Thanks! You have to make reservations this year even to get on the line to walk through Santaland. If you don't have reservations, you can't do anything. If you already have your dates for the LIRR Holiday Express, I'd start stalking the reservation site 5 days before you want to go since that's when the system will open up!

Yup, I knew that Chat Icon I didn't anticipate that we would still have to wait an hour though since it's reservation only. Silly!

Ahhhh the joys of Christmas! After holding her $hit together for the long wait, I'm sure my toddler will have a meltdown as soon as we're front of the line and let in.......

Ugh! I think we are going to skip it, I'm glad you posted this though because I figured it would be a 5 minute thing like last time. We are going with a large group, and I think some of them might have a hard time waiting that long!

Thanks for asking. I got a reservation for this weekend as well (but, never got the email confirm).

Definitely not waiting that long to see him, it sounds like a meltdown waiting to happen!

We did it last year and we only waited about 1/2 hour (it was a Friday night). I thought it worked well.

My confirmation went into my spam box! It was literally sent within a minute of my making the reservation. Check there!

I did and it isn't there. I even tried to make a reservation on a different day afterwards to check (a less busy day) and nothing. Oh well, it sounds like we're not going to go anyway.

I'm really annoyed at this system. We get up early and head in to see the tree at 530 in the am, then head over to Macys to see Santa at 7am. Takes 20 minutes to get in and get out once they open. Now you need a reservation and from what I have been reading and hearing it still takes over an hour to get in to see him. No thank you.

We are heading into the city Monday to see the Christmas Show and I thought it Santaland would be a great addition to the day- I have never see Santaland before. Seeing they had this reservation system I thought Great- this should be an organized breeze. After seeing so many reviews and FB comments to Macys it looks to be a total disaster. We are going to pass. There is very little in the world that will make me stand on a line for 2 hours.

Unless Santa was handing out winning power ball tickets, there is no way I'd even wait an hour for it.
So not worth it

I'm so sad to hear this. Last year we had reservations and we waited less than 5 minutes. I was looking forward to doing it again. My almost 11 year old is convinced that the NYC Macys santa is the real one.

Re: Macy's Herald Square Santa/Santa-Land

It was the most horrific experience of my life last weekend. 2 hours on line and we didn't even make it to Santa. My kids were so cranky and tired and i was just done.

We left...1st time in 10 years with no Santa pic!

Re: Macy's Herald Square Santa/Santa-Land

So I guess it's safe to say this new reservation system is a fail??

I don't understand how it's so hard. It should be easy. Make a reservation- that's your time. Then, next!

What's their issue?

People who are going during the week are raving about it! I guess it might just be a volume/weekend issue? My friend went yesterday and said people were making reservations on the spot.

My friend went on a weekday and had no issues - I think the issues are on weekends when they sell out.

I made a reservation last year and didn't wait more then 15 minutes but the whole experience was so disappointing. One of the things the kids were looking forward to was the wooden escalator. I thought the whole thing was so disappointing. Macy's really needs a face lift as how you enter and exit is looking a bit sad. The area to meet Santa has a Santa type factory feel to it. Some people really like it but I thought it was just okay. The santa at the Plaza was a much nicer experience.

Does the Santa at the Plaza have any fun decorations, etc.? Was the line long? Maybe we will do that this year

He's in a small room that is just a walk through...The room is decorated really nicely and the Santa and Elves were excellent. But the Plaza also has that huge tree in the lobby from Home Alone and you can go downstairs for a quick snack and leave Madeline a note which is fun.

ETA: When we went, a Thursday afternoon, there was no line for seeing Santa.
