Update #1: Awful results from NT Scan

Update #1:

So many of you have sent me FM's and wished me luck yesterday that I wanted to give a quick update on my CVS- no results yet but at least the process has started.
I went to Madonna in brighwaters yesterday and met with Barbara the genetic counsellor - she was really nice and very informative - nearly too much information - makes you wonder with so many variations of what can happen when the egg and sperm meet how we can have so many healthy kids. This was the most emotional part for me and I did shed some tears during this appointment.

We had to drive to Mineola then to Madonna to have the CVS done and have blood drawn.The staff there were so nice. I had a scan first and that was tough as I was looking at this beautiful little baby on the big screen on the wall and wondering what life has in store for him / her ( think its a him but more on that later). The technician was really nice and then the doctor came in - I think it was Dr Goldstein but not sure - he was super nice and put me at ease straight away and was making jokes and small talk the whole time. The process of having the needle inserted was like a big pinch and a little pain but it really was not as bad as I thought and it was over very quickly. They did another scan to make sure the baby was okay and that was it, I was cleared to leave. The cramps were pretty bad for about 20 mins afterwards and on and off for the evening but not bad enough to take a pain killer.
Today I feel some pain in my vagina area but nothing major. I am glad its done. I will have some preliminary results tomorrow evening so until then I will be keeping busy and praying a lot.

On a lighter note when the technician was scanning the baby yesterday I got a clear shot of its legs and it looked like there was something sticking out!!! but then I said to DH there is no way you could see a penis at this stage right - 13 weeks?

Worst news ever....my ob called this afternoon to tell me my blood work came back with a 1/7 chances of having a down syndrome baby, I am devastated

So I am scheduled for a CVS on monday in Mineola.

If you have had a CVS can you please share what your results were before you had your CVS and the outcome?

Did anyone have it done at Mineola?

How long did it take?

Did someone go with you?

I live out east so I will have to drive to brightwater first for genetic counselling and then to mineola for the procedure. I really, really, really dont want to bring my kids. I would much rather DH stay home and take care of them. I have no family here and no one knows I Am pregnant so dont want to get into telling anyone especailly under the circumstances - do you think I am unfit to drive home afterwards.

I have been crying since I heard and I am feeling so defeated and so worried right now.

Oh man, that is so nerve wracking. Do you have a sitter that you can leave the kids with? I never had a CVS but I would imagine you would need your DH there.

Oh nooo I am so sorry to hear this hun. I will be praying for you. I have a friend who went through this and I am not 100% sure what her numbers were but she was very freaked. She got the CVS and all came back perfect!

But I do want to say that they gave her a sedative of sorts that made her very loopy. I remember she was very out of it and tired. Her hub went with her and drove her home. I would say def get someone to go with you. Either hubby or a family member. Can someone watch the kids and you say you have a dr. appt? Maybe even make a white lie…say you need to have a mole removed and you are scared you may faint and need DH to drive with you?

I am so sorry you are going through this.
I have not had a CVS, but I think you MUST bring your DH with you. Even if u have to bring the kids. Do not go alone!!!!!!!!! Maybe u can just tell a friend that you have an emergency and need someone to watch the kids? I imagine a friend would know not to push for info.

Thanks DH is insisting on coming with me...DS is 2 so no worries there but I will have to take DD out of school - kindergarten...any excuses for the teacher that does not involve telling her why I Am going?

I had pretty much the same scenario. Very enlarged neck thickness seen during the NT scan and a recommendation to go right to Winthrop Perinatal Associates to have the CVS test. No one knew we were pregnant at the time (we were going to announce after that appt).... and it was the summer, so I just asked my dad to watch the kids for the afternoon because DH and I wanted to grab a quiet lunch...

Anyway, the procedure itself isn't bad at all. The doctors and sonographers are very thorough - they re-did my scan just to be sure my OB's office had the right measurements. I had it done abdominally, since the placenta was in a position to do it that way.

Children are not allowed in the exam rooms, so I would definitely get a sitter and definitely bring your DH. I actually called before my appt at one point to see if I could drive myself home and they said yes, but in the end, DH was able to go. I felt fine afterwards, and just took it easy the rest of the day.

I had it done on a Friday morning, and got the call on Monday that the FISH test (quick analysis) came back perfect and that everything was fine. The waiting was the hardest part...

I am so glad I had it done. The peace of mind was great. They did tell me I had an increased risk of a heart defect considering my scan results, so I also did an echocardiogram at 23 weeks.

My baby boy was born 2 weeks ago - happy and very HEALTHY!

ETA: Considering its your bloodwork that came back, there is a very high rate of false positives! My OB didn't even bother with the bloodwork, he just did the scan and then I went on for the CVS test.

I am so sorry you're going through this. There is such a high rate of false positives, so I hope this is the case for you. You definitely need your DH for genetic counseling, I imagine that you will want him there for the CVS. I have never had one, but you are going to be emotionally drained, and potentially somewhat uncomfortable. You should not go by yourself. I am praying that you receive good news after the CVS.

I just wanted to let you know my sister had her blood work come back 1 in 4. She had the CVS done and it came back perfectly fine.

The blood test is give false results all the time so try and stay positive.

Thanks for sharing your stories and for the positive outcome stories - they mean a lot. I am all cried out now and totally numb.

I am really leaning towards just going by myself. i am pretty good at holding things together when I have to - I had a miscarriage last year and only a few people knew it happened and I kept a happy face for my kids and for school situations etc. I went for a d&c by myself and DH just picked me up afterwards so I do think I will be able to handle the procedure on monday and knowing my kids are safe home with my DH rather than running around a waiting room would be less stressful on me.

I can watch your DC for you if you can't find anyone. I won't charge you anything, I can't imagine how upset you are and anything that I can do to help I certainly will. I am home all day with my DS who is 18 months. I am in South Amityville if you want to drop them off on the way. Seriously, if you can't find anyone I am more than willing to help you out.

What keeps running through my head is that there are SOO many people who have had inaccurate testing on this scan. And their babies turned out just fine. I would be totally stressed out also but please remember that there is a high percentage of error with this test and a good chance that everything could be just fine

I also think it would be best for you and DH to go together and to get someone to watch your kids. And while this might seem like a totally crazy offer, I am in Levittown, about 15 minutes from Mineola. Are you going to Winthrop Perinatal? That's where I've gone for special testing. If you need me to watch the kids I can...I am a Stay-At-Home-Mom. Just let me know.

I am sending you and your LO tons of prayers!!! I agree with PPs that the blood tests have high rates of false positives but I can completely understand your worries.

First off, I am sorry you are going through this. Remember, there a a LOT of false positives. I didn't have CVS, but I had an amnio in Mineola. I assume you are going to Winthrop Perinatal Assoc? Is Dr. Chavez doing your procedure? I have heard amazing things about the practice, and my amnio (done by Dr. Rafael) was the best experience that something like that could be. You will be ok

Phew...I have been thinking about you. Glad that the testing is done, and you did it early in the week so you won't have to wait through a weekend for the results so at least that is a good thing. Hoping you get great results and this was all just a big scare. I will be keeping you in my thoughts!

As far as something sticking out----we are team green and always have been with both pregnancies so I always tried to avoid looking! So I don't know, I'm not much help for you there!!!
