The crew members that they needed seats for were not UA employees taking a vacation. They were deadheading to their next job assignment. Can you imagine the uproar if the following morning, UA had to announce they didn't have a flight crew?

If anyone erred here, it was the police who used force to remove the passenger. The only time force should be used is if the other passengers were in danger.

So let's say this guy just sits there and won't get up. They say- Sir you have to get off this plane.
He says no.
They say you have to.
He says no I am not moving from this seat.
It goes on and on like this.
How can they remove him without forcing him at that point?
If you can't talk someone out of there seat, what should they have done to get him off that plane without putting hands on him?

I don't agree with what happened. But, they don't just pick someone at random. If no one volunteers, they start bumping those who checked in for their flight last. Last year on our flight to Puerto Rico (by way of Orlando), Southwest was oversold. They offered HUGE compensation. 4 times the price of your ticket, and the next flight. No one would bite. So they had to deny the last people to check in for their flight. So if you had C59 or whatever the last number is, sucked to be you! Horrible, but unfortunately it's their rules.

Thanks for clearing that up. I was wondering if it was random and if so how they did it.
It makes sense that they would take the last to check in in this situation.
I guess if you HAVE to do it forcibly that would be the fairest way.
But no matter what, it really sucks that this can happen.

They should install seatbelts in the toilet.

If an employee needs to go on the flight and there is not enough room, they strap onto the toilet. Then once the light is off, they have to stand. No one is supposed to get up and go to the bathroom during that time, anyway.

Airlines set their own "boarding priorities" -- the order in which they will bump different categories of passengers in an oversale situation. When a flight is oversold and there are not enough volunteers, some airlines bump passengers with the lowest fares first. Others bump the last passengers to check in. Once you have purchased your ticket, the most effective way to reduce the risk of being bumped is to get to the airport early. For passengers in the same fare class the last passengers to check in are usually the first to be bumped, even if they have met the check-in deadline. Allow extra time; assume that the roads are backed up, the parking lot is full, and there is a long line at the check-in counter.

Good to know. I always get to the airport SUPER early because I am a paranoid, anxiety ridden freak. So I guess that might actually work in my favor in this case..

In this case, United stated that a computer randomly selected 4 passengers to be removed from the plane. That's their statement.

Just saw this update:

Chicago's aviation department says one of its police officers involved in dragging a man off a United Airlines flight at O'Hare International Airport did not follow standard operating procedures and has been placed on leave.
The department said in a brief statement Monday it did not condone the aviation security officers' actions Sunday night.
The statement did not release the officer's name and it was not immediately clear which of the three men seen in the now-widely seen video taken by another passenger which one was placed on leave.

United Airlines fiasco

The airline was completely in the wrong dragging that man off the plane. I don't care what the law is, it was wrong. If they knew they needed seats for crew then figure that out before the people board the plane. Having them seating and then asking people to leave is not right. Obviously the airline needs to review their policy on crew flights and make sure that it does not happen again. Overbooking is just poor business practice and allowing that should be revisited.

Doesn't matter what shit clause is in a contract- people, here people representing a business, need to think about the repercussions of their actions. Obviously this was a mega dumb move or else there would be nothing to apologize for.

United Airlines fiasco

Like other posters stated, the issue should have been handled/resolv d at the gate. N one should be removed off of a plane for this reason after it boards

Re: United Airlines fiasco

If UA knew they needed seating for crew members why did they not handle that before boarding? They were completely wrong to onboard the passengers then forcibly remove them. Does forcibly removing a passenger require to slam his face violently into the arm rest of the seat across the aisle and then drag his limp body away while he's unconscious with blood pouring down his face and alarming the other passengers in the process? The way they're yanking this 70 year old man over his armrest in that tiny seat I'm surprised the extent of his injuries aren't worse. What was the point of letting him back on the flight after that violent display of physically removing him? Then they delayed the flight to clean the plane. This story is so bizarre. Was he violent? There has to be more to the story otherwise it was completely mishandled by the airline.

This is so unfortunate. UA is the airline I use every summer to go to my country, because is the cheapest that flies direct, but I'm rethinking about using them again Chat Icon I feel for the person that was dragged that way, and I can't imagine the other passengers experience after witnessing that Chat Icon

I was just thinking the same. We are flying to Europe soon and if me and my SO got split up, I would be a wreck.

Bottom line is airlines have too much power, take too many privileges and act like god. Number one priority should always be safelty obviously but it seems that we as costumers barely have any rights....

One of the reports I saw said they give priority to families and unaccompanied minors.

I also saw one account that said the man volunteered to leave the flight but once he heard how long it would be until the next flight he changed his mind bc he had patients to see the next day and said he couldn't miss them. The whole situation is just crazy, I'm sure there were many options they could have tried before calling security and obviously security needed a better way to handle this safely.

If I book a flight and pay for it, I am expecting to be GUARANTEED a seat on that flight.
I don't want to hear bull shit about over booking etc.
What if you were going to a funeral?
A dying relative?
A real fuking emergency?
What if your family member was dying and you missed seeing them because of this horseshit?

How is this practice even acceptable???

And how do they decide who they kick off when nobody volunteers?
Just at random?
Insanity

Have you ever heard of a contract of carriage? If not you should probably look it up. Basically it says:

No seat is guaranteed. You can be denied boarding if the airline sees fit for any reason they deem. You can also be asked to switch seats if they feel the need to make the plane safer.

All instructions by airline personnel need to be followed. Not following would be considered a crime hence the need to have the cops come on board.

Airlines overbook ALL THE TIME because more people cancel flights than you think. These airlines have algorithms that determine likely number of cancellations per flight. While "involuntary denied boarding" as the airline call it does not happen often... it happens more than you think. They aren't going to fly with empty seats if they can afford it.

They don't need to keep "upping the ante" to pay more to get somebody off. They can offer more and you can even make an offer of more. The airline may take it to avoid the PR nightmare. But they are not required to pay you what you demand to get off. They can simply remove you.

While I am not a United apologist, if this guy was removed by law enforcement for not following crew instructions, he needed to be removed forcefully.

If you don't like the contract of carriage that you automatically ageee to by flying on that airline, fly another airline. But I'll give you a hint, most if not all airlines including JetBlue and southwest have similar rules in their contract of carriage.

OK thanks for the info
And for the record I am not agreeing with this guy resisting and having to be physically dragged off a plane- that was wrong.
But I think this so called "contract of carriage" is ridiculous Just my opinion
And from what i can see on this thread I am not the only one who feels this way.
And speaking of PR, now they have a huge PR nightmare on their hands- whether or not they were within their rights. More bad press

United screwed up by allowing him to get on the plane. If this was dealt with at the gate like every other IDB then this would be a non news story. They are still within their right to have the guy removed though.

Bad press only goes so far. There are only so many airlines with so many travel routes. Airlines are more crowded and profitable than ever. I don't think this is going to crush United in the long run.

If anything maybe the cops might get a slap on the wrist with how it was handled. But again, the guy refused to get off after being asked by law enforcement.

This. The airline should have caught it at the gate.
How long did the crew try to get him to leave the plane? Did he get aggressive with the crew? Was there yelling? Is there video of the "before" the police finally took him off using force? What happened with the police up until that point?

There's not a lot told in this story. He had a paid seat and should have been able to fly. But like others have said, the airline had the right to ask him to leave. They probably would have given him an upgraded flight or something for inconvenience. Guessing. But we'll never know because this man decided to fight , for however long, u til the crew had no choice but to call the police to remove him. It's not easy to watch. But for me, it's because a grown man was fighting the inevitable. It wasn't fair. Sometimes stuff isn't fair. And like I said, he may have been given something for his inconvenience - but we'll never know.

Re: United Airlines fiasco

I dont care how "legal" it is to do what they did. There are a lot of better ways they coukd have dealt with THEIR MISTAKE. First, deal with the fraudulent overbooking BEFORE putting anyone on the plane. Second,if your employees need to be somewhere the next day, put them on another airline or for goodness sake in an Uber! And even if it WAS legal to assault the passenger I dont see how causing bodily harm isnt actionable. United should know better, especially after the leggings fiasco 2 weeks ago. (I happen to agree with United on the leggings case but my point is that their PR people are clearly brain dead).
