Unemployment
What can you tell me about collecting unemployment. I cannot seem to catch a break. New job I started in May and company is talking lay offs due to budget concerns. I am preparing myself.
How to file? Where to file? How long does it take to actually start receiving benefits? I will not be getting any "severance" as the company seems to be on the verge of shutting down entirely. How much $ will I receive? Will it be comparable to my salary? I live paycheck to paycheck as it is.
Anything you can share about the process?

Unemployment
Max is $420, less if you choose to have taxes taken out. I believe there is a one week waiting period. Google nys unemployment and it will bring you to the registration page. It's all done online.
In the meantime start applying for jobs asap.

Re: Unemployment
when I filed in PA where I live, they took the last 18 months of income earned and calculated what I would get from UE. I was a part time employee. If I had been full time I probably would have hit the max.
I think in PA its $600 something. In NY its 400 something.
its all done on line, and there is a waiting period. I was audited and had to go to my local UE office and show them proof of job searching. (There is a grid they will probably want you to fill out). I imagine NYS isnt any different in that respect. at the time I was eligible for th state and federal extenstions. I dont think there are more extensions from either now. :(
its direct deposited.
start looking. hopefully you find something soon.

File online. Super easy.I think there is a week or two waiting period. But its really the time it takes for them to process everything.
I have collected in 2 states (NY & MA) over the years and both were super simple. And yes NY is max $420 and if you are living paycheck to paycheck you might want to defer the taxes and deal with that when you are back on your feet. I always did it that way.

Re: Unemployment
If you get laid off, you will file online the next business day. Then you have a 1 week waiting period. After that, you file again once a week for as long as you're unemployed. The amount you get is calculated based on what you're currently getting paid, but as others have said, the max is $420. It's about 2 weeks until you get your actual first payment, but you can do direct deposit, which speeds up the process.
The process itself isn't hard. You can get audited and they will ask you to prove that you're actively looking for a new job.
Hang in there and start applying to new jobs ASAP! Good luck!
