Underlying Issues...Please Enter

Just wondering...a lot of you ladies talk about having other issues along with IF, like thrombosis and some condition that starts with a "M" (can't recall the name) to name a few.

How did you find out that you had these conditions? Are these conditions related to the reproductive system? Just curious if there were tests that you took early on in the game and you found out early on or if something caused you to find out that this was a problem.

We were supposed to go in for an IUI yesterday but when by RE did a sonogram on Saturday, even with Clomid, 100mg, my left ovary produced follicles but none of them grew and my right ovary only produced one follicle (i know quality over quantity) but it was already very large and he couldn't be quite sure if it was a cyst or not.

He told us it wasn't worth it to do the IUI and to just go with timed intercourse instead. He still had me trigger so i guess we'll see what happens although i don't hold out much hope for this cycle.

I just like to be prepared and have some knowledge of what may or may not happen in the future.

Thanks Ladies! Chat Icon

he left the decision up to us. and when i asked him what his personal opinion was, he said that he didn't want us to waste our efforts on something that wasn't really a follicle.
I don't remember how large he said it was, 3.5cm, i think Chat Icon

Can I ask if you were monitored enough? 35mm is a large for a follicle or a cyst but did it just grow too large overnight or was it in between appts? I usually go in 3 days after my last pill for a follicle check then I go in at least one more time depending on how big it ... I hope they are monitoring you enough because that is the key when taking any fertility drugs...I really hope that the TI does it for you...lots of luck!!!

You're with Dr. Grunfeld, right? I trust him wholeheartedly. I was in this morning and only had 1 follie, but it's the right size so I'm doing my IUI on Wednesday. He won't waste your time/money if it's not right.

But my next question to him would be - what is next if this doesn't work? He may want to try something besides Clomid. He may want to run more tests. Or he may need to monitor your natural cycle, if he hasn't already. Do you know that you normally ovulate on your own?

yep, Dr. Grunfeld Chat Icon
I asked him what we would do next and he said he would bump me up to 150mg of Clomid but even he told me that is not a miracle drug and that there are much better drugs out there that can help. He also though the follie was too large to be a follie but suggested that i trigger anyway just in case and that we would try again next month. I was told that i don't ovulate strong enough to make the follie's grow to the perfect size on their own.

i went in for bloodwork on cycle day 3 and then for a sonogram on cycle day 12 for a sonogram and that is when he measured to see how big the follie was

Ahh ok...I guess for the next cycle they will monitor you earlier? 5 days after your last pill seems like a long time to not check and make sure that everything is working...are they bumping your dosage up because you only produced one follicle?

I dont mean to question you docs protocol for you but I have found you have to be your own advocate and def press your RE for answers and even question why they are doing things a certain way...

I was already on the 50mg of Clomid and it didn't do anything for me. The last two months of Clomid are the same so they want to try 150MG of Clomid before moving on to something else i guess. If this isn't it for us this cycle, when I go in next cycle, I will ask if i can go in somewhere in between day 7 but before day 12 to have a sonogram done to see if the follies are just getting too large too soon. I did produce follicles on my left ovary, but none of them grew large enough, they were all too small. There was only that big one on the right side.

Thrombosis has to do with blood clotting and so does MTHFR. Some Drs test for it and some do not.

The day you come back for monitoring depends on how long your cycle is. For me, my cycle has been 26 days so I come back on CD 10 instead of CD 12. You can ask to come in on CD 10, too. It's just likely that if your natural cycle is longer, you'd have to come in again which is more time and more money for you.

A follie doesn't normally just continue to grow. If it really is a follie and it's that big, you probably would have ovulated naturally on your own, rather than it just keep growing.

I was on Clomid 100mg for 2 months and produced 1 mature egg each time, too. If it doesn't work this month, I'm moving onto a different protocol next month. IMO, 1 month can just be a fluke so it might be worth trying the second month at 150mg before he puts you on something else. But it's your body and I'm sure you can ask for something different next month. Dr G really listens to what you want and adjusts your protocol to where both you and him are comfortable.
