UGH - Car Seat Issues

It appears that DD is 1/2 inch away from the height limit on her convertible seat. Chat Icon However, she is a solid 10 pounds away from any sort of booster seat. Which means I have to invest in another convertible seat. Chat Icon Chat Icon I don't think I can wait until April when the new Baby Bargains comes out. The edition I have is not even the most recent one.

Is anybody with the 8th edition willing to look up convertible seats for me to figure out which ones are good for a 39 inch 30 pound kid?

TIA!!!

Re: UGH - Car Seat Issues

I would consider a seat that converts to a booster, like the Graco Nautilus. She can stay in the 5pt harness for now, and you can convert it to a high back booster and then a backless booster as she grows.

Ditto - Britax Frontier 85 is also an option.

By 1/2 inch do you mean the car seat recommended height or by the standard (1" below the shell for RF, tips of the ears level with shell for FF)?

Weight limits on seats are absolute, but because children's bodies grow differently, heights are more of a guideline. Two 39" tall children could fit very differently in the same seat because of differing torso length, head size etc. which is why the guidelines of 1" below the shell for RF and tips of the ears for FF exist.

For a FF only seat, Graco Nautilus, Britax Frontier or Recaro ProSport are all good choices. All install well, are easy to use, reported to be comfy by kids, have SIP headwings and convert to a belt positioning booster.

If you're looking for a convertible RF/FF seat there are many more options like the Graco MyRide, Britax Marathon/Boulevard, Evenflo Triumph as a couple examples.

I agree. I have both the Graco and Britax and by far prefer the Britax.

The carseat guy has been recommending the Nautilus - which is a convertible (forward facing), then it becomes a booster with a back - then a backless booster. We have it for DD#1 for DH's car - and DD#2 has outgrown the comfortsport in DH's car so he recommended we get another one for his car.

We had the same issue a few years ago and bought the Recaro YoungSport which is a 5 point harness carseat that converts to a belted booster. Win/win solution!Chat Icon

I mean 1/2 of the seat's height limit for forward facing (coupled w/ DD's screaming that it's too tight and hurts every.single.time. she gets in the car for the duration of the ride unless she somehow manages to fall asleep).

I will look into those FF only seats that convert to belt positioning booster.

Thanks!

. I am the opposite. Yes while I do love Britax as a company, I found the Nautilus to be superior in comfort and it had better reviews. I purchased the Frontier and Nautilus and had them side by side in my kitchen with DD sitting in them and testing them out. Graco won hands down! Go on Amazon.com and read the reviews there. When my DS outgrows his Boulevard I'm getting another Nautilus.

She should fit until the tips of her ears are level with the shell or her shoulders are above the top harness slot. (Straps should always be above her shoulders)

Is there another harness slot that is higher? You stated this is a convertible seat, right? If so, many seats have 2 sets of loops on the harness where it attaches to the splitter plate. For some reason, most of them are shipped on the second (upper) loop but they can be extended, which will give more room.

Here's a pic from a graco seat that explains it. http://i993.photobucket.com/albums/af60/jellybellybeans_2009/Car%20Seats/Manuals/SS1.jpg

This will hopefully buy you a little time until you get the new seat and she'll stop yelling at you.

I would suggest taking her with you to BBB/BRU and trying her in the seats to see how she fits/feels in them. Try also to install them in your car.

What installs well in my car or is liked by everyone else may be a thorn in your side, KWIM?

The straps are at the highest harness slot now, and I realized last night her shoulders are even with those slots (maybe even a tad higher). That's what prompted me to look in the manual to see what the height limit for forward facing is. Which in turn lead to this post.
